FIUDAY MORNING. MAY •>'>, 18KL
YOUTH’S DEPARTMENT.
9 ... . ----- - • - ■
A I'IUTOM.
t HY E*M A GARRISON JON KH.
It was an established custom in
th* Goldsborongh family for each
one of the children to repeat a verse
nf Scripture as a part of the morn
ing and evening devotions.
Lntie, a little bine-eyed fairy of
seven or eight summers, was the
youngest of the flock ; and it hap
pened on a certain morning, that
her verso was, “Inasmuch as ye
have done it onto one of the least
of these, ray brethren, ye have done
it unto tnc.”
“I don't quite understand that,
papa," said the little girl, coming
to her father's knee when prayers
wore over ; “what does it mean ?”
“Well, it means this, my dear,”
said the gentleman, “if you were
going along the lane, and saw a
poor, ragged beggar sitting under
the hedge, if you stooped and gave
him a.eup.ot.cold water, or a mor
sel of bregd, or any little thing to
comfort nnd help him ; it wonld
ho the same as if you had given it
to the Lord Jesus. Don’t you un
derstand now, my dear?”
“Yes; papa ; 1 think I do,” said
Lutie, and Went her way.
About a week after there was a
church fair in the village, and one
bright afternoon, Mrs. (Joldsbor
ough s.iid to her little daughter,
“Lutie, mv dear, you have been a
good, obedient little girl this week,
and mamma feels like rewarding
you. Here’s some money in this
purse; you may take it and go over
to tho fair and buy anything you
like for yourself and little May.”
“Anything I like, mamma?” cried
the delighted child, dancing np and
down for joy. “Oh, that is so nice,
I’ll buy lots and lots of pretty
tilings. Oli, mamma, lot me start
this very minute, mamma!”
“You may start as soon as yon
please, Lutie," said the lady. Ho
the happy little maiden got her
broad hat, and with her precious
purse in her pocket, set out.
The afternoon was lovely, and the
green lane that led to the village,
was bordered by fragrant hedges of
lmwthorno and wild rose; the birds
sang merrily in the trees, and great
golden winged butterflies sported
in the sunshine.
I jilt io tnigiid on, linr liftlo lionrl
running over witli delight, ns ..slut
the money in her purtte, nml
thought over the lovely things she
would buy.
As she neurcd the village, she
saw an old wotuiiti sitting under a
tree, with a basket in front, of her.
The little girl stopped to look at
her, and saw that the basket was
filled with match boxes and shoe
strings.
"Buy some mutches, little lady,
please,” cried tiro old wotiian, in a
shrill voice. “L liaint sold enough
to pay for a loaf of bread, ami I’m
dretful hungry.' 1
“Oli, I can’t-buy,” said Little and
sue,ran on ns fast as her feet would
carry her until she t filched the.
bridge. Then she .paused and look
ed. hack. “If I bought her matches
nufHot her got a loaf of bread,” she
said to herself, 'twoiihl he tlip same
ns if I'd" done-it to the Lord Jesus. ’
Bho hesitated a little while, jingling
the, money in her purse, ami look
ing- wistfully towards the village,
wlpire tiro gay Hags, fluttering from
the windows of the fair-rooms, were
plainly visible, and theu she turned
slowly back.
“Buy some matches, my pretty
dear,” squeaked the old woman, as
the child ap|roached'.
Lutie went up to her nnrfput the
purse in her hand.
. "Take it, poor woman.” she said,
and buy your supper." And tie
fore tin' woman could give her the
matches, she ran away.
“M amnia,” said Lutie that night
when Iter mother came tr> kiss her
before she went to sleep, “I don’t
mind about the fair ope bit. To
lie here nml think I've done a good
tbrng for the Lord Jesus to-day,
makes me happier than if May nml
I had all the pretty things in the
world.”

Who can ilosortbo it? Wh it pen
cau write its record ? What tongue
can truly tell it V It is a sad death
oh' how" sad ! There is no com
on that dying pillow, no repose,
flighting up of joy in the depart
ing spirit. Gloom, sadness, intense,
anguish are there making those last
hours terrible in the extreme! Oh,
his end; his awful, dreadful, end!
Think of it, reader, of the thousands
that go to such a death iu this land
every month! Every one of these
are forever shut out of heaven!
Church of God awake to this truly
terrible fact and startling truth!
Oh, professing Christians! how can
you remain idle for one moment,
and see your fellow man drooping
into a drunkard's grave, and per
haps a drunkard's hell, without
raising your voice to warn him of
jUie awful danger and the final fate
If the drunkard. Let the death,
awful de ith of the inebriate,
his soul lost forever, let this be
thought of by those who vote to
place the tenitation in the way, to
sot the trap to catch men!
—I wonder many times that ov
er a child of God should have a sad
heart, considering what the Lord is
prepa ing for him. —Rutherford.
