YOUTH’S DEPARTMENT
THOU ANI) I.
Strange, strange for thee and me,
Sadly afar,
Thou, safe, beyond, above,
I, 'neatli the star ;
Thou, where flowers deathless spring,
I, where they fade ;
Thou, in God’s Pradise,
I, ’mid the shade.
Tbon, where each gale brings balm,
I, tempest Pissed ,
Thou, where true joy is found,
I. where ’lis lost;
Thou counting ages thine;
I, not the morrow.
Thou, learning more of bliss,
I, more of sorrow.
Thou, in eternal peace,
I, mid earth’s strife;
Thou, where care hath no name,
1, where ’tis life;
Thou, without need of hope,
I, where ’tis vain;
Thou, with wings of dropping light,
I. with time's chain.
Strange, strange for thee and me,
Loved, loving ever;
Thou, by life's deatidefs fount,
I, near death’s river;
Thou, winning wisdom's lore,
I, strength to trust;
Thou, ’mid the seraphim,
I. in the dust.

I dont like them one Lit. They I
made me go foot in all my classes?,
and kept me from eating the first
strawberries that ripened in my j
own little garden. They made my '
face round like a dinner plate, and
as red as a rose, but not as pretty.
They made my eyes red like I bad
been crying becauso somebody
turned tno down in my Geography,
or I had turned over a bottle of
ink in my lap, before all the school.
My lips looked pouted as they are
when the scholars say I cheat
when playing. My nose! Oh ! it
looked like somebody had hit it
with the poker. hair was tan
gled and I looked real funny.
I know mama was sorry for me,
but she laughed and laughed when
she brought the glass to the bed
for me to see myself. But wns’nt
it nice to wait until my dolls, Daisy
Doan, and Nettie Mooro, were
through with the same complaint?

The lato Thurlow Weed had no
superior ns an editor in shaping
pnrty policy and influencing party
readers. His counsel was always
sagacious and his courage firm.
Obstacles excited him to surmount
them.
Eearly struggles had developed
his manhood, and taught him that
few tilings were impossible to pluck
and persistent work. Ho loved to
talk with young men, and inspire
them to high aims by incidents from
his early history. Sap gathering
and sugar making are not consid
ered favorable to literary pursuits,
but young Weed managed to get
through a good many valuable
books in the sugar seasou. He
said onco:
“During the day wo would lay
in a good stock of ‘fat pine,’ by the
light of which, blazing in the front
of the sugar house, I have passed
many and many a delightful night
in reading. I remember in this way
to have read a history of the French
Revolution, and to have obtained
from it a better and more enduring
knowledge of its events and hor
rors, and of the actors of that great
national struggle, then I have re
ceived from all subsequent read- i
ings.”
Such men, winning their way
by sheer forco of habit, aie an
honor to the nation.—Youth's Com
panion.
INDIFFIIIfENCIC.
If there is a disease in our mod- j
eru theology and our modern phi-:
losophy of life more conspicuous <
than another, it is indifference to!
sin. We lull it with anodynes. We
call it anything but sin. Wo form j
our schemes of social improvement
and material progress without any!
conviction of this deep plague spot I
of our nature. Wo hide it from our
selves until it breaks out in some j
scandalous form, and startles us I
with its intensity. We will drill I
men into morality; we will repress
crime by education; we will empty I
our gaols by philanthropic logis-!
latiou; but the sin that dwelleth in !
us is too strong for human rerne- •
dies, too rampant for the social re-1
former’s pruning hook. Far truer j
is the novelist’s sentiment when he
puts into the mouth of one of his
characters the awful but grand
words : “How gladly would I en
dure the torments of hell if thereby
I might escape from niv sin!”—•
Dean of' Peterborough.
—“I belong,” said Christine Nils
son to a St. Louis reporter, “to the
old Lutheran Church, and I never
leave my room to give a concert or
go ou the stage for an opera, with
out dropping down on my knees
and praying to (iod to help mo in
my effort to please the people. It
gives me strength and confidence to
successfully go through my per
formance.”
