FRIDAY MORNING, JUNE 27, IWS4.
TIIK SOIll.i; j.ke.
Gen. Lee, at the close of the
war, received innumerable offers to
engage in commercial enterprises.
Insurance companies, railroads,
and man}’ large corporations at the
South wero anxious to pay him
any salary he might demand, sole
ly ?or the use of his name, without
any labor on his part, or the incur
ring of any responsibility whatever.
A committee of Englishmen, the
Duke of Sutherland and Mr. liaros
ford Hope at tho head, offered him
in fee a splendid estate in cne of
the midland counties of England,
coupled with tho guaranty of an
income of £5,000 a year as long as
he lived. He gratefully declined
all of these offers, and accepted
the Presidency of Washington and
Loo Univorsity at a salary of
$3,000 a year. Hero ho earned his
living as tho hardest worker in a
hard working faculty in training
tho youth of tho country up to the
very hour of the paralytic stroke
which immediately preceded his
death. Gen. Leo loft three sons.
They, too, received many offers of
a smilar kind, and likewise declin
ed them. Two of thoso sons are
now prosperous planters in Virgin
ia. The third succoded his father
in the Presidency of Washington
and Lee University, and has filled
the position with credit for the
last thirteen years. The true Am
erican spirit shines in Gen. Loo’s
example, the spirit which promp
ted Washington and his Generals
when they retired from tho public
service, onrichod only with tho rec
ollections of their groat achieve
ments, and scorning to make mer
chandise of their fame.
LULU HURST IN WASHING
TON.
In response to an invitation from
tlio paronts of the Georgia prodigy,
says a Washington special of the
13th inst. to the Now York World,
Professors Hilgard and Taylor, of
the Smithsoniau Institute, atten
ded this evening a soanco givon at
the Metropolitan Hotel, for the pur
poßO of witnessing an exhibition of
the powers of the young woman.
It has boon claimed for Miss Hurst
that she is able to coin at will ner
vous strongth sufficient to overcome
the muscular resistanco of the
strongest man. The exhibition was
in tho prosonco of Senator liansoin,
Congressman Reese, of Goorgia,
Congressman Willotts and wife,
Judgo Harris, of Virginia, Rich
ard Townsend and a number of
pooplo prominent in politics and
socially. Tho result of tho perfor
mance was sufficiently mystifying
to mnke Miss Hurst very popular
with pooplo sookiug after tho now
and unoxplaiuable.
In the clear light of a blazing
chandelier, in tho prosonco of about
fiftv watchful pooplo, tho Goorgia
girl showed hersolf tho possessor
of most curious strongth. With
hor hands resting lightly upon tho
handle of an umbrella hold by a
stout young man from among the
spectators sho was ablo to shoot
the umbrella through spaco by a
simple exorcise of her will. Con
gressman lteose, of Goorgia, who
is a very powerful man, triod to
hold a chair in his arms whilo Miss
Hurst rested hor bauds lightly up
on it. Tho chair was forcod down
in spito of tho most violont strug
gles of tho muscular Crougrossman
until it was about two inches from
tho floor. “Now push the chair
down to tho floor,” cried Father
Hurst. Mr. Itoeso changed his re
sisting powers and boro his whole
woight upon tho chair without be
ing ablo to make it touch tho floor.
This experiment was ropoated
with two rnon, and then threo tried
to hold tho chair still under the
touch of the young woman, but in
vain. It was testod in various
ways, but no ono was strong enough
to resist tho so-callod force. Prof.
Taylor and Hilgard refused to per
sonally tako part in any of the ex
periments, which were mado under
their inspection, and could givo no
explanation of tho peculiar power
displayed. Thoro is no claim upon
tho part of tho Hurst family of any
supernatural oxplanatiou of the
young woman’s powers. For niuo
months she has boen tho possessor
of the nervous strongth exhibited
this evening. Sho can raise chairs
in which stout men are seated by
simply placing her palms on the
back of the chair. This was done
this evening with many well known
fentlemon who were present. Miss
lurst is a strong, healthy looking
country girl. She claims to be in
a perfect gale of spirits when ex
hibiting hor strength. She laughs
nervously at every movemnt of the
strong men in their mad struggles
to resist the lightest pressure of
her hands. Congressman Blount, of
Georgia, who was present, thought
it would have been a most excellent
thing if Bill Morrison could have
secured Miss Hurst’s support early
in the session for his tariff bill.
From present indications, Blaine
will evidently need the services of
the Georgia girl to reach the Pres
idential chair.
—The Maryland delegation to
Chicago presented the resolution
of the State Temperance Alliance.
While they were at that business,
somebody broke into their special
car and stole all their champagne.
