The Little Coma.
We cannot imagine anything mote exquisite
of the kind thnn this poem, by Mrs. H- L
Hortwice. It is one of those poeais that one
cannot bcc to read through:—
l Twag u tiny, rosewood thing,
Kbeu bound, and glittering
With its stars’of silver white, ,
Silver tablet, blank and bright
Downy pillowed, satin lined,
That I loitering, chanced to liud
'Mid the dual, and accut and gloom
Of the undertaker’s room.
Waiting, empty-" ah! for whom.'
Ahl what, lore-watched cradle bed
Keeps to-night the nestling head,
k Or on what soft, pillowing brrasr
N Is the cherub form at rest,
That ere long, with darkened eye
.Sleeping to no lullaby,
Whitely robed, and still, and cold.
Sale flowers slipping from its hold
SIihII this dainty couch enfold
Ab! what bitter tears shall stain
All this satin sheet like ruin,
And what towering hopes be 1 id
•Neath this tiuy coffin lid.
Scarcely large enough to bear
Little words that must be there,
Little words, cut deep and true,
Bleeding mothers' hearts anew—
Sweet, pet name, mid 1 Aped rwol
Oh! can sorrow’d hovering plumes
Bound our pathway cast a clot in
Chill and darksome us the shade
By an infaut's coffin made!
.from our arms an angel Hies,
And our startled, da/.zeled cyu
Weep around its vacant place,
Oauuot rise its path to trace,
Ounuol sec the UBgel lace!
