Mr. Otis, nothing daunted, and assuming his legal digni ty, replied: ‘,Sir, I respect the day and the law, but 1 shall be obliged to break the .Sabbath, tbe day, and your head, if you dont quist'y re move yourself from my path. But the pioua officer was not to be bulled by tbis, and again repeated bi3 command. Mr. Otis saw that DOthing was to be gained from the intimidation, and that he must fall back upon his last resource, lie accordingly Iregan to feel around him for the Revised Statutes. 'Well, my friend,' said he. it won't do aDy hurt to look at the law a little which puts me so completely in your power; for you kuow it is a good old legal maxim that no man shall be condemned but by the judeement of hie peers and the law of the land-' Mr. Otis opened tbe Statutes turned at once to the article against Sabbath breaking. ‘You find it till there,’ said the officer, with a sbrowd ehrug of tbe shoulders at the idea of nabbing and penning a person whom he now discovered to be a live attorney. Mr. Otie proceeded to read : ‘if av person shall be guilty of breaking the Sabbath, as aforesaid, it shall be lawful for the tiding man to arrest and stop him,’ Ac.— Tbe eye of the great lawyer slightly sparkled as he read the statute, though with a rather doleful air, he added, ‘It is true, sir, the law is againat me, and I must submit. ‘Well, then,'rejoined the tiding man,‘you must mako up your mind to quarier in the lock-up till to-morrow; so, if you please, we will ride back together-’ '<ib, no,’ retorted Otis; 'that will never do. I don't intend that you shall ride back,or with me, either, to day! The statute toads—mind you—that you shall arrest and stop. That is all. You can stop me as long as you please. But that ia tbe extent of your power. The law says nothing at all about your carrying me off to the lock-up, nor of your riding iu my gig on the Sabbath, either'.’„ It was a terrible stormy day. The poor tiding man was already completely drenched, and th6 prospect of standing by the gig all day and night, in tbe muddy road, was by no means either pleasant or compatible with the dignity of bis office, Mr. Otii again repeated, -1 still wish you to eonaider, air, that 1 am your prisoner—for so roads the law—nothing more. You can go back ir -ou please, but I intend to stop where 1 am;’ and accordingly he drew bis robe around olf ^ made preparations for a snooie, till 'Monday morning. Tba officer looked us blaud us a piece of marble, and felt as uncomfortable us* a young gotUog in a abower He gazed a moment or ffiTtyoa the composed expression of the learn ed advoeate^nd -jure enough he did go back. Ur. Otis stopped just long enough to permit bin iegnl friend to get comfortably out ol j sight, and then he quietly proceeded on h-s j way, reaching the line without further molesta tion. | Tbe fame of this legal quirk soon spread by birth a I’olisli .Tew (everybody knows what honest folks 1‘olish Jews are.) I began life as a barber; but the despot of Rus sia having forbidtlen his Polish subj< cts to shave or trim their hair, I joinod a military band, and beat the drum and a retreat to America, where I was Fry-ed over by an American manager, and came out as a cele brated piaoist 1 married a Herman Jewess, , ' iO who had been metamorphosed into an Italian prima dona, and have done wlmt I could to show my ingratitude to the silly Yankee cities who wrote me into celebrity. I am the au thor of a ghostly opera, composed of ci|ua! parts of Don'zetti, Bellini and Verdi, andhavo always, to the best of my ability, assisted my fried Ole Boll in humbugging our musical patron, Yankee Doodle, and afterwards taking possession of the best part of the plunder.'
