Wo find th* following letter from Oenertl
Welker, written in rwpottoe to ooe from ties.
Wool, to National Intelligencer:
To ran Editou—(leotlemen:—I hare just
toen a letter addreraed to you by Oen. Wool,
from Troy, New York, oo the 16th of this
month.
Respect for the Qeneral’a position require*
me to notice gome of the statement* of bis let
ter, though pity for an old public servant,
wheae memory, age and disease have impaired,
might urge me to pam It unnoticed.
1 mast, however, do Gen. Wool the juatioe
to ray, that I am very unwilling to impute to
him the authorship of a letter characterized by
so much want of fhirneas and frankness. A
politician, and not a soldier, must have indited
the sentence* winch, while apparently accurate
are really suggestive of notruth.
I beg leave to say to you that one afternoon
as Gen. Wool was leaving San Francisco for
Benicia—when ho was on the wharf, and a-
bout going aboard the steamer—I distinctly
stated to him the nature of my graot from
Oastillon, and be as distinctly wished me all
success in my enterprise.
As for what the General said about ‘filll-
buatering schemes’ and the formation of an ‘in
dependent slave confederacy,' I blush that snch
phrases should be published over the signature
of a Major Geoeral in the army of the United
States.
I remain your ob’t aerv’t,
WM. WALKER.

Murder.—We understand, says th e Mobile
Tribune of the 2d inst., that one of our well
known pilots, Reuben Nash, was kilted on
Friday, near Mount Vernon, in the upper part
of that county. He was io pursuit of a runa
way negro, aDd meeting in the swamp, the
latter raised ,hi* gun and fired. Mr. Nash
lived about three boon. He leaves a wife and
family of ohiklren. There was, it is said, great
excitement in the neighborhood, and doubtless
every means will be adopted to arrest the
murderer.

ed Simon of Tiber as.
No indeed, answered TOte; they have got
plenty of fire, and the bells are now ringing for

Coffee.—The sleeplessness produced by coffee
is not that of an unpleasant character. It is
simply a painless rigileuoe; but, if often re
peated, it may be exceedingly prejudicial.—
Frfllst de Savarin illustrates (be power of oof.
fee by remarking that a man may livo many
years whio takes too bottles of wioe daily; but
the same quantity of ooflee would soon make
him imbecile, or drive him into consumption.
