ATLANTA DAILY EXAMINER. by LOOHRANB, dowsing ft CO NEW SERIES, VOL/T “ ERROR CEASES TO BE DANGEROUS. WHEN REASON IS LEFT FREE To COMBAT IT.”—JEFFERSON ATLANTA. GA.. THURSDAY MORN0JG, AUGUST 13,1857. • H.STEKLE, J. W. IXllVUl.AOi, 1 fcdU NIMBRR A THE DAILY EXAMINER. ATLANTaTaUOUST 13,1857. ‘ IVMlh of a Noted Do|. The Mobile Tribune learns that 9oine tieartleaa person, a few nights since, poi soned an old and faithful dog, which was a universal favorite in that city,.from the fact that he ljas beon a faitful attendant ot Wash ington Fire Company No. 8, having belonged to it since he was a small puppy, and never naving been absent from his post when an alarm was given, since he became attached to it. The firemen of Mobile were sincere,, ty attached to him, and would have defen ded him from harm almost with their lives, and at the .house of no Fireman in Mobile would “ Old Boy” have wanted a bone, or a good comfortablo corner to sleep in. The Tribune in speaking of his services to the Fire Department, says : “ At time* when an alarm of lire was . given, and the bell could not be heard, nor any means visible to the trace the wherea bouts of the same, this dog has acted as a guide, and carried the noble firemen to the spot where their services were needed. If pear a place, too, where fire had broken out, he would by his howling and scratching upon the door, awaken inmates of the house and instantly bound forward to meet the engine of No, 8, that lie might conduct ita members to the place of the action.” We envy not the heart of a man, who, wantonly, and for the mere sport of the thing, would kill such a dog as that, when there waa no earthly provocation for it, as lie was as harmless as he was useful. Dog though ho may have been, he possessed a thousand times more principle than the man who could thus ruthlessly take his life.—Co* iumbiM Sun. « Nothing to Wear.” Talk at Ticknor’s about books and book- writers, says the Boston Post, is sometimes very piquant and amusing. Here is a pas sage from a colloquy between a couple of littratews who had dropped in at ‘the corner,’ of a Saturday afternoon. The parties aro a Cambridge-man and a gentleman from the rural districts, and having discoursed a while of graver matter, they came to Butler's po em about ‘Miss Flora McFlimsy.’ Cam- bridge-man loquitur : ‘ Mr. Butler seems to be in a ‘peck ot trou bles,’ and ‘nothing to wear’ turns out to be nothing to brag of.’ ‘It’s a clever poctn, sir, and written, 1 have no doubt, by tho gentleman who first gave it to tho public.’ ‘Butwhat do you think of the statement of Mr. Peck and his daughter.’ ‘ Worthy man, Mr. Peck, ! daro say ; and smart girl, Miss Peck, but against the two pecks there’s a bushel of reasons for doubt ing the story, or at least tho inference. 1 look to the intrinsic evidence, no woman ever wrote a clever satire on humorons poom of forty iincs yet, ot ever will. And as to this girl of fifteen—it’s preposterous. If Butler got a hint of this thing from that lost manuscript (which 1 don’t believe) lie should have acknowledged it handsomely at the start. If he has sinned in the point of ver acity, taut pit pour Butler—but as to the au thorship of the poem, he either wrote it him self or got a man to write it for him.’ * But what do you think of the writer’s re markable familiarity with the manifold de tails of a lady’s wardrobe 1’ ‘ Bosh .'—every married man knows as much as that, and many a bachelor more— if he choose to tell it. Bosh ! 1 say.’ ‘ But,’ said the Cambridge man, ‘what do you make of the lines quoted in the news papers, from Miss Heck’s lost manuscript V • That’S a PccA-adillo—the didn't write 'em!' sod bowing politoly, as if in apology fur the pun, the rural gentleman departed. \Yc bet our money in acordance with his opinion.— Shall we lose 1 Qut’en Sabe! The immor tal Keplet could wait in a more momentous matter than this, so can we. Butler against any man, or mensurr, until further develop ments. Serious Difficulty at Kpbiuia Springs. The Lancaster (Pa.) Express gives an jc- ount of a difficulty that occurred on Satur day at the Ephrata Mountain Springs, in that county. We condense as follows : “ It appears that at the dinner table, after most of tbs boarders had retired, a gentle man named White, from Baltimore, got in to an altercation with one of the colored servants, who, he alleged, carried away his plate, upon which he had just ordered meat. The charge waa denied by the servant, when high words took place between the two, which ended by tho former picking up a tumbler and hurling it at the head of the latter. The servant evaded the flying mis sile by dodging, and directly made towards Mr. White in a menacing manner, and struck him in the face, urged on, it is said, by tbe other aervants in the room. The noise of the disturbance immediately filled the room with the guests of the bouse, principally noutherncrs, who caught t'io servant and Giccd him bow iL* loom- Cousidcrabi^ confusion followed the fracas, and a meet ing was soon afterward called and attended by nearly all the hoarders of the house— the proceedings, however, wore conducted altogether by gentlptnen from the South, of whom there are several hundred at the Springs. Speeches were made, denouncing tlie conduct of the servant in very seveie terms, and even counselling violence to bis person. Tho Express goes on to say that the sym pathies of the crowd seemed very much in favor of Mr. White, not only by the boarders from tbe South, but also from the North, and tilings were in a fair way for adjustment, when a gentjeman from Baltimore arose and made a violent speech, denouncing the free colored population in general, and indiscreet ly reflected sharply upon Pennsylvania and her laws. To this the Pennsylvanians took exceptions, and the speaker was interrupted by a Philadelphian, who replied with much animation. Tbe latter was backed by scv. eral others, and a scone of great excitement ensued, hut fortunately it soon subsided - The southerners next demanded the expul sion of the servant, whereupon all the ser vants hold a meeting and resolved to leave in a body in case the offender was expelled. On Monday, however, the whole aflair was settled by the servant voluntarily leaving thejilace. i. f. i.owk, t. i. ItlCV PRINTING Jlail-Sonb Itlitihilts.
