BY LOCHRANB, DOWSING ft CO. “ ERROR CEASES TO BE DANGEROUS, WHEN REASON IS LEFT FREE TO I'QMBAT IT.”-JEFFERSON J. H.ATGELE, J. W. IXJWSKO, 5 NEW SUMS, VOL. 1- ATLANTA, GA.. MONDAY MORNING, AUGUST 17,1857. NUBBt 31 THE DAILY EXAMINER. ^ATLANTA. AUGUST 17,1857. KmWHMc or * Daellit. A paper just received mentions the following Incident u haring occurred at Naw Orleans: A Frenchman lately arrived, went into a restaurant nod called for a glass of beer. As the boy brought it, m tall man, unknown to bim, who had eyed the Frenchman rather in solently on bis entrance, snatched the glass from the table and drank it. VI hare not the honor of your acquaintance sir," remarked the Frenchman, surprised at the familiarity. “Nor I of yours,” sharply retorted the other. m You are seeking a qaarrel with me, then t" « I should be sorry to leave you iu doubt of the fact," was the insolent response. “Look you, nr,” said the new comer, “ I am a man of peace, and mind my own busi* ness. I meddle with none, and I receive no unprovoked insults. 1 pass yours by for ibis time. Boy bring me another glass 1" The Creole broke into taunting laughter, and wheu the glass was brought, stepped up and seined it, and drank part of the contents and threw the remainder away. The French man would have rushed upon bim, but wa e held back by the bystanders. Hold, sir I ” they cried, “or you are lost! It he does not kill you on the spot, be will in the duel; for he is the moet skillful duelist in Louisiana. With pistol or rifle, or with the sword, he is unequalled. He has killed thirty- four men and wounded over sixty more.” « What you tell me," replied the Frenchman .. convinces me the more that he ought to be dealt with.” He then drew near the man who had insulted him and eaid: “ Sir, I happen to be in a particnlarly good humor to-day, and am not disposed to take offence. You have taken away two glasses of beer I had ordered ; it is now my turn, and I hope my forbearance may teach you better be havior. Boy—another glass 1 ’’ The boy brought it trembling, as if antici pating a catastrophe. Scarcely had be placed it on the table, when the bully again setaed it and toseed off its contents. At the same in stant, like a tiger on his prey, the Frenchman threw himself on his enessy, and assailed him in the face, breast and side, with a tempest of blows and kicks. The bully, wbo had nottime to recover himeelf, was soon stretched on the floor, and pommeled still more unmercifully til! bleeding and quite insensible. The victor then quietly drew forth his pocket book, took out a card and pinned it to the vest of his pros trate foe. He then eaid to the spectators of the affray: “ If there is present any friend of this indis vidual, I would inform him that he may find me at my lodgings every morning from eight o’clock to eleven. Boy bring another glass of beer I” This time he took the glass and drank it off eompoeedly. Then, paying for tho four glasses he turned and left the place, amid the wonder of all the company. As they lifted the vanquished bully, it was foand that two of his ribs were broken and one of his eyes was seriously damaged. The card bore the inscription: <* Luchin Pktit, Fencing Master from Par- ia—will give instructions in fenoing, boxing and the various methods of fighting. Terms moderate." Some eix weeks after this scene the door of M. Petit’s apartment was fluDg open, one morning, and a man strode iu without announce, neat. “ Do yo know me?" he cried, in a voice choked with rage. “ Perfectly," responded the fencing master, “what iiyonr wish?" “To kill you," thundered tho bully, wbo had juit reoovered from his wouuds, of which, how ever, he bore the traces. “ I know I was first iu the quarrel; on that account I give you the choice of weapons. Bat come, make haBte, for you or I anst bea corpse before sunset." “ Let us rather talk tho matter over coolly,' replied the Frenchman. “ I have no desire to day to kill you, than to beat you the other day. But if you are bent on picking a qBar rel you will find me ready." “ Wretched bat •’ $, we shall eee ! I have killed thtrty.four men already in cue Is, and you are much mletaken If you think to make me afrad of you! ” There waa no help and the combatant pro ceeded to fight out their quarrel. Petit defer ring to the bully, who chose the sword, iu the use of which he waa very expert. Ho received a wound in the arm, and the fencing master proposed an adjustment, but the Oraole insist ed that the encounter should be fatal to one or the other. It was not long before he fell mor tally wounded. The community was delivered from a aafeance, and Petit'i fame eo widely established as a professor of the scienoe af bat* tie, that pupils came to him from every quar ter. <ffl*Tbe Newburyporr learns that tbs po tato rot begins to nuke ita appearance npon be vines in that region, and the new root* on tin demit Thi Latut Itbk.—'The (porting columns of the London Ilhufrattd Ntvot. of the 25th of July, five daye before the Goodwood Cup race, aikd the morning on which the Pcrsit sailed, baa the following: ‘ One or both of the American horses will come out in the Cop.
