EXAMINER. BY LOCHRANE, DOWSING & CO. “ ERROR CEASES TO BE DANGEROUS, WHEN REASON IS LEFT FREE TO COMBAT IT."-JEFFKKXi»N J - ‘I.STKKL8, J„.„. J' v\ uowmsio, s NEW SERIES, VOL. 1- ATLANTA, GA., WEDNESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 9, 1857. 51- JUlantn IBa ill) dtaiwr. ATLANTA,8BPTKMBER~9 , 1857’ Men at the Knoxville Conven tion' The following Bketche* of the most prom inent members of the Southern Commercia Convention are taken from the Marion (Ala) American: The Disti.nouirhko Men.—I must con clude thia letter, and 1 will do it by a brief mention of the celebrities who were present. To begin with the President, I must mention Professor DeBow, of Louisiana,.the editor of DeBow’s Review. lie is a small and coarselooking man, with prominent features. Not by any means brilliant, ho is a monu ment of patient labor, raised to distinction by unceasing effort. Ho was the head of the census bureau, under Mr. Pierce, and superintended the statistics of the census of 4800. Although Alabama was largely represent ed, there was no genuine celebrity or man oV mark among them. David Hubbard, of Notth Alabama, was the chairman of the del egation. He is a plain, blunt, honest man ( but otherwise he did not particularly impress me. However, I like him. From Georgia, the most striking man is Ben Yancy, now of Atlanta. He was the President of the last Senate in Alabama.— Very handsomo, offine figure, with fair coins plexion, light hair, blue eyes, golden specta cle, composed and easy in manner, be has a very scholarly and impressive appearance. A man who secs him once will turn to look again; a woman who looks once will look all tho time. Mr. Yancey is a man of decided talents, but a good deal milder and less emphatic than his Alabama brother. 1 have known him since I was a boy, and always admired him. Mr. Overby, the Maine Liquor Law candi date for Governor of Georgia in 1S33, was chairman of the Georgia delegation. He is a grave, dignified and benevolent looking man. - From Tennessee, the most noticeable per sons were Col. Sneed and Horace Maynard. The former, tho member from the Knoxville Districtin the last Congress, and Mr. May nard, the member elect to tho next Congress. Both are Americans, and both men of tal ent. Tho first man of the South Carolina dele gation is the Hon. XV. W. Boyce, for sever al years past a member of Congress. He is •bout thirty-five ycari old, but looks younger, and is a very handsome man. Ho is very reserved and taciturn, and rarely engages in conversation. Ho speaks fluently, and there is always pointedness, force and pith in his •pceches. There is nothing about the man or hit speeches of the common place and hackneyed order. I always listen to him with interest and pleasure. Mr. Bryan,of South Carolina is, on ac count of his physique, ‘tho observed of all observers.’ He is very large in person, and has a beard which a Spanish Don ora French Marquis might envy. It is fifteen inches long, as fine as ‘split silk,' and as dark as JErebus. Ho wears an ample Byron collar, withoutacravat. Hois anelcgant and much esteemed gentleman, and has very respect able talents. Hon. James Lyons, of Virginia, is a fine specimen of a Virginia gentleman. Appa rently over fifty years, he seems mature, but not old. Ho is composed, solf-postessed and courteous in manner. He it an able lawyer, and is very formidable in discustion. I must not omit n notice of Brotvnlow— Everybody baa heard of Brownlow, and ev erybody is anxious to see him. He if of me dium site, firmly knit together, a brunette in hair, eyes and complexion. His features are sharp, pointed and firm, indicating great energy, firmness and courage, physical and moral, A bright eye gives a flash of intel ligence to his face. He is a modest, quiet and unpretending man, as gantle as a dove to his frionds, but as fierce as a hyena to his foes. The Board of F.xamiuera for the new Bteam sloop of war, owing to the absence of Captain Pendergasl and Commander Hartutein, have not yet organized. They will all doubtless be present to-morrow, when they will immediate ly proceed with their examination. A detachment ol thirty-three marines left here yesterday, under Lieut. Fontain, for the frigate Merrimae, at Boston. An interesting question will be submitted to the Cabinet to-morrow, involving the official uetion of Secretary McClelland, and the per, sonul honor of the present Secretary of War. Governor Floyd is detrained to place himself right on the record. It is not probable that the contemplated changes in the heads of the government bureaus will be olliciully announced before the termi nation of the present fiscal quarter of the year. During August more than 1,500 land war rants were Issued under the Bounty law of 1865, to satisfy which 231,000 acres are nex cessary. So far 26,500,000 acres have beeu granted under the act. Edward S. Hastings has been appointed re ceiver of public money at Montgomery, Ala* baraa. A patent for 35,000 acres of land, selected in lieu of those located by military warrants or scrip, and issued by virtue of a special cer tificate in favor of Wisconsin under the second section of the act of March, 1855, is now in course of preparation in the General Land Office, and will be transmitted to the Governor of the State in a few days.
