ATL^fir^PT^ii|RlC8i5T7r How to Hot Rid of a Du el. Amoug the various mortifying dtaqnalific* tiona under wfflch the Irish Catholics labored,, previously to the passage of the Emancipation Hill, the Ditkrming Act, prohibiting them from having in their possession any offensive weapons, appears to have been not the least galling to our Hibernian fellow-sabjccU; inas much os it debarred them In many instances, In eases of real or supposed nggrievouces, from their dernier retort, which from time immem orial; to the more dilatory as Well 09 uncertain redress, offered by a conrt of law. An ungen* ’ qrous or timid adversary, especially if a mem ber 4f the Government church, might (as has h 'been more than once the cose] evade a hostile meeting with a Papist, on the ground of the above mentioned disqualification. A circumstance of this hind occuWed in Hallow, county Cork, about the [attend of the lasfr Atury, when the oppelantfllevised a ;. whimsical and ingenious experiment to evade the law, and put himself on a Icjel with his overscrupulous antagonist. Mr. Flynn, a re- ' spectable Catholic hat ter, was, or supposed himself greviously insulted by Mr. Putsch Doolittle, a tailor, of the Established Church, residing in the same town. Having in vain endeavored to obtain satisfaction (in-the na tional and current sense of the wordj and be ing given, moreover, to understand that the *^jpfcodox tailor magnanimous by declined giving A the meeting, for do other reason than, lest T»y soidoing ho should lie the proximate cause oPsnbjceting Flynn to the penalities in bucIi » case made and provided, the spirited hatter re.- I', solved on changing his religion, pro tempore, p- amfactually read his public recantion, during tr* the morning service, in Mallow church. There ‘ ■ as fate would have it, Mr. Doolittle chanced . v to be present, and great was his astou- ■ ishmeat and consternation at the unexpected, (r unhoped for conversion of his mortal foe to the ►. true faith! Had it taken place in St. Stepb- i en’s Chapel, he would doubtless have depre ciated,in parliamentary language, the 'indecent haste," &C., with which Flynn had deserted his party. Howbeit, the tailor raw and ac knowledged the necessity of taking imme diate measures to avoid bloodshed. He mqdc a preciptate retreat from the church, aud’look sanctuary in :hc Roman Catholic chapel which standB hr the same street. There, having oi»ci)- ly professed himself an unworthy member of tbe Church of Rome, he was cordially receiv ed, and initiated by baptism and other usual ceremonies. Mr. Doolittle, however, had scarcely time < io congratulate himself on his escape from f ' the dreaded duetto, when he was disagrecas by undeceived by a practical illustration of J i he proverb, '.'one good turn deserves another." The courageous hatter felt indignant at 1 what he could not but consider a paltry sub terfuge; and was'not. to ho put off (like an old beaver) so easily. He therefore took an early opportunity of seeking a conlej- ence with his qutndam priest and lather* . eonl'essor, who found him a willing convert. J A slight nominal penance sufficed io recon-. , eile him to the placable church which he deserted; certainly through interested, but by no means through mercenary motives. • He lamented his back* tiling in due form; ' and renounced the damnable heresies to • which, in an unguarded moment, lie had subscribed;—all this once more in the pres ence of the tailor, who now began to be convinced, that no points of doctrine, how ever lough and knotty, had strength to bind over his Protean antagonist to the peace. Nothing, ho could clearly see, was left him in tins'emergency, but to breut; cover again, and seek refuge in the bosom of his mother church; and this he effected with all itnag* inable speed; sending at the same time, a ' notification to the angry hatter, that their opinion on religious matters were so dia- uyTricully and irreconcilably opposite, that his conscience would f't)t permit him, Doo- ^ lut|«, to retain any u(Ah whatever, that < might at any time be embraced by so hlood- i* thirsty and unchristian an adversary as Flynn. We are assured that the foregoing ancc dote, improbablo as it may appear, is an . . absolute fact, well known as such by most of •tire inhabitantsq( Mallow; and that everj circumstance, even to tbo names polemical warriors, is accurately detailed.
