These Associations are organized with a limited amount of stock, the number of shares depending upon the size of the city wherein it is located. Americas would require one with from 1,500 to 2,000l shares at one dollar each. Now, suppose that we had such an as sociation here, authorized to issuefifteen hundred shares at one dollar each, and all the stock taken. Here we would hare $1,500 a mouth or $18,000 a year dishorn ed for the improvement of the city, as it would all go to build new houses or buy those already built. I kn -w of nothing that would benefit the city more with ro little individual outlay. Every month $1,500 would 'die put up at auction and sold to the highest bidder and any one having fifteen shares would be entitled to bid; the highest bidder would be awarded the loan or advance of $1,600 loss the amount bid as premium. He would be required to take fifteen more shares, making the total amount to be paid into the Association by him $30 a month, which goes to liquidate the loan, and in about five years the whole amount will be paid. In other words in five years he will have bought and paid for a home cos tin f' him Fifteen Hundred Dollars with the money he otherwise would have paid out for rent and had nothing to show for it. J. HEX’ Tiio “unkindest cut” that Con gress has yet given to the President was its refusal to prolong its session at his re quest If another instance of this kind can be adduced in onr history, it must have occurred long ago. The reason of the Presidnet’s request was the apprehended effect of the European war upon onr commerce—a matter about which the Executive Jidministratioa ought to be re garded as especially well informed. Editor Republican : I wish to call tho attention of tho citizens of this city to some of the benefits to bo derived from a “ Building and Loan Association. ” Nearly every city of tho size of ours either already has or are about to have organization of this kind, and I am satisfied that we will not be “ behind the times ” if the people will but give the subject that attention which it deserves. As an inveatment to a man of capital it will pay better and afford better security than any other investment that ho can make. And for the man of limited means, it is a great blessing, as it wonld enable him to buy or build a house and pay for it in about five years, with the money that he now pays for rent—that is, the Association loans him the money to bay house. Now, instead of paying $25.00 r 830.00 a month for rent he pays it to the Association, and in about five years he ha) paid back, with interest, to the Association what it loaned him, and has a home of his own. In my next I will give yon an illustration of the workings of such nn institution. J. F. Americas, July 18, 1870.
