Loves.
A village not fifty miles from Americas
has succeeded in getting up a first-class
sensation. On last Saturday morning, a
man abandoning a wife and five children
attempted to elope with a girl o'seven
teen. The father of jibe girl, a moat esti
mable gentleman and minister, was absent
from home. The mother, a noble wo
man, discovering her daughter in the act
of entering the carriage of the man who
would lead her to destruction, if he had
not already accomplished her ruin,
alarm' d the neighbors, and following
the carriage half a mile, with the assist
ance of several lady friends succeeded in
rescuing her daughter from the carriage
and forcing her to return home. We
suppress the locality and names out of
respect to the parents of the girl. The
indignation of the community against the
man is very great and at last accounts
the Sheriff had been sent in pursuit of
him. We hardly know what punishment
he should receive, if the community
should lynch him they wonld do violence
to the law, bat wo are inclined to think
they wonld sobserve the ends of justice.

Messenger of the Covenant.”—A
monthly Religious Magazine devoted
to the defence and illustration of the
doctrine of the “final salvation of all
men.”
The first, or January No. of a neatly
printed Magazine of 32 pages, with cov-
r, baa been handed na by its Editor and
Proprietor, Dr. L. F. W. Andrews, of
this city. The work is neatly printed,
by V. P. Sisson k Co., Atlanta, and con
tains a Doctrinal Discourse of 16 psges
and a variety of editorial matter on va
rious theological subjects, in support of
the TJniverealist Faith.
Terms of the Magazine—82 00 per an
num a single copy. Six copies, $10. Ten
copies, 816. Cush orders msy, for the
present, be forwarded to the Editor, at
Americas.
As Dr. Andrews is so well known in
Georgia as Editor and Minister of the
Gospel, we do not deom it necessary to
say more of this Neitor of the Press, of
this Stato, than that be brings an unim
paired intellect and long experience to
the present work, and will doubtless make
bis Magazine eminently acceptable to
those who are interested in the important
subject of man’s final destiny, as under
stood by the Uoirersalist Denomination.
His old friends should lend him a help
ing hand.
De* Cotnmr Election.—An election
wa. held on Wednesday, 17th inat, to
fill out the unexpired term in the Degie-
latoreof Dr. H. a Lipaey, deeeored,
end resulted in the election of Mr. M.
H. McAfee, by a majority of one bon-
xdei and eleven over the combined vote
of his competitors:

George P*ge ... .... 174
Montroville Ray, .Sf 114
It appeared bard to get at^bod j to ran
in this election. “They are not as we
•re” here, and we find it difficult to un
derstand such a state of facts. Jnst
twenty-fonr miles north the climatic dif
ference ia huge. There a man has to be
conscripted to get him to run for office.
Here patriotism paisa tee so tapidly that
* l**!?® of the voters are willing to
make ominous personal sacrifices for po
litical distinctions.
Billet Dodx Himts.—As this is th<
season of billet donx we give the follow
ing for the benefit of onr young folks :—
To send a note with none of the corners
folded, signifies friendship; the upper
right-hand corner folded, I love yon ; the
lower right-hand corner, forget me not;
the upper left-hand corner, I return your
passion ; with the upper \right and lowet
left-hand corners folded, yon have trifled
with me; upper left and lower right-
hand corners folded, I am independent;
all the corners folded, indifference.
Arrested.- About two months ago
Benard and Babe Gonldiug, father and
son, of this connty, were arrested on a
charge of an assault and attempt to take
the life of Mr. Thomas Gam age, but
made their escape from the hands of
the Sheriff. Nothing had been heard of
them until Saturday last, when Sheriff
Wheeler received a dispatch from Haw-
kinsville informing him that the men
were arrested. They were brought to
the city on 8nn<lay and turned over to
the Sheriff, aud arc now enjoying the
comforts of onr jail accommodations.
Carrier's Address.—Onr carrier boy
will present his annual address to onr
city patrons on Christmas day. Through
heat and cold, wet and sunshine, he has
faithfully served you with the Republi
can, and a kind token of your apprecia
tion will be cherished by him, and cause
him to wish you as “Merr. a Christmas”
as he hopes to see. Have a quarter or a
half ready for the carrier boy when he
oalls on yon with his address.
Santa Claus.”—This venerable old
man will make his annual visit to the
houses of our citizens to-morrow night.
We hope that none of the little boys and
girls will be slighted, but that tho old
gentleman will dispense hia gifts in every
household. Let him make merry the
hearts of the little ones by filling their
stockings with nice presents.
Christmas.—So far as we have been
able to observe, not much preparation is
being made to celebrate the Christmas
holidays. We learu that there will be a
Christmas Troe in the Episcopal Church
for the scholars and patrons of that Sun
day School. Outside of the usual amuse
ments for the little folks, we hear of no
extra doins ” in particular for the oc
casion.
f- Those desiring to purchase arti
cles for Christmas presents cannot do
better than to call at Mrs. M. T. Elam’s
Millinery Store where they will find a
very choice lot of Holiday goods, special
ly selected for the occasion. Do not fail
to examine her stock before purchasing
elesewhere.
Personal.—Gen. Thomas Pinkney
Smith has been in our midst u few days
on a side call to his friend, Dr. Wm. Bar-
low.
Also—Dr. L. F. W. Andrews, irre
pressible by the flight of years, stoat in
body, his qaiver fall, promises good
many years yet.
P* On the 18th we had, perhaps, the
argest concourse of negroes to see ths
circus that ever shadowed the streets of
Americas. There were some six or seven
acres “ more or less. ” Tbfcy came by
squads upon every approach to the city;
many arriving before day—ponring in
from that time until afternoon. Nine-
tenths, probably did oot have the stamps
Boesssry, fusing their own vernacular,
to tarn in their gals and cbildon,
The whites were here too, tottering
under crop liens and seeking relief from
disturbed minds and conscience by going
to the show.
Many had nerve to resi t the tempting
humbug and didn't go. A large part of
this latter class, however, didn’t have the
money and oonldn’t borrow it. Wa are
not personal in this remark.

Fast horses and fine vehioles are fur
nished at publie expense, to clerks and
other officers at Washington. The cor
respondent of the Cincinnati Commer
cial ventilates this scandal and gives the
items. Here they are :
The Secretary of the Treasury has, for
instance, a carriage and a span of horses.
The Commissioner of Internal Revenue
has a double and single carriage, and
span of horses ; the Appointment Clerk
of the Treasury Department has a car
riage and horse ; the Superintendent of
the Treasury build ng, an officer n
known to the law, has a carriage,
buggy, and a horse; the Supervixing
Architect has a carriage and horse ; the
Second Auditor has a carriage and horse ;
the Superintendent of Engraving and
Printing has a horse and carriage ; each
of the Assistant Secretary have horses,
carriages and drivers. All those horses
and carriages are bought by the Govern
ment and kept at the public expense.—
There is a stable just below the Treasury
building which is used for this purpose,
and a superintendent of stables, who
has charge of the concern, is employed
and paid $900 per annum, and four assis
tant* are furnished him at $2 per day,
each. There are seven men who do
nothing bnt drive these virtuous officials
about in Government vehicles, who are
on the rolls of the Department at $60
per month each. 1 be other departments
of the Government are not suffering for
transportation facilities. The Attorney
General has tbreo horses and two car
riages, with drivers and footmen, who
are paid as messengers; the Secretaries
of War, Navy and Interior, and the Post
master General are lixewise furnished
with public conveyances for themselves
and families, while a'l their principal
subordinates are likewise eqaslly well
supplied with horse flesh.

Line Railway and Telegraph Company. ”
The road is to be commenced within two
years and finished in six years, construct
ed with doable track and laid with *teel
rails, with permission to lay double
branch tracks to Clesvelsnd, Toledo. De
troit, Cincinnati and St. Louis, and priv
ilege to extend the track from St. Louis
to Omaha. The capital is fixed at 3100,-
000,000, with the right to purchase ex
isting roads, which shall be relaid ;with
steel rails. The rate of fare is to be fixed
at not more than three cents per mile. —
In retarn for their franchise, carrying
the mails and sending government tele
grams at its own rates, all the company

The news from Washington indicates
either the repeul or the modification of
the present law no as to deprive it of its
obnoxious and expensive features. The
York Tribune contains the follow
ing sensible remarks on the subject:
The original bankruptcy act was pass
ed in 1841 and served w» a model for the
present one of 1867. Iu each instance
the reasons for enacting such a law was
precisely that which is now to be urged
for its repeal; the relief of the mercan
tile community. The form of relief af
forded by su*di nu act bos always been re
garded as among the possible consequen
ces cf commercial crisis, and the Con
stitution adverts to it in terms indicating
an expectation that it might at some time
be required. A good Bankruptcy act,
faithfully and economically administered,
should serve to aid aud esse rather than
oppress those who are straggling with ill
fortune. The Bankruptcy Courts of
Eugland not only reloase the* honest debt
or from the clutches of hi* grasping
creditors, they add a certificate of char
acter. which freqnentl j serves as a letter
of credit to start the unfortunate man in
lmsin«»s again. Our present bankruptcy
law was largely advocated at the time of
its passage as a measure of relief to the
Sonth and to merchants who had been
engaged in Sonthern trade at the out
break of the war. It was argued, and
with justice, that a great wrong to indi
viduals, as well as injury to the commu
nity, was inflicted by holding this clavs
of debtors io a position where their busi
ness tallents and energy were permanent
ly repressed; where effort to better their
condition and . again their standing in
bnsioesa did (but draw upon them again
the hungry brood of creditors.
But in the actual working of this aet
it wonld seem that a new class of op
pression has originated. The law is
needlessly and astonishingly expensive
in execution. It is a notorious faet that
the vast majority of bankruptcy cases
there is little or nothing left after the
forma of law are satisfied and the lawyers
are paid. Only a rich man should at
tempt to pass through bankruptcy ; the
fees, the references, the percentages, the
thousand and one minor expenses, are
far too much for an honest, poor insol
vent. Merchants, recognizing the feet
that they will get little or nothing from
a bankrupt, are placed at the mercy of a
designing debtor who only threatens
bankruptcy; and to accept whatever he
may offer as a compromise, as better than
ion an alternative.
