Homntimo during Mondaj Bight or
««riy Tucvl.j morning, fire praouen
made their ereape from a gloomj-looking.
dilapidated building looatod in thii city,
known as the County Jail. Tho prison-
«r. were Willi.m and Joe Kelly, white,
confined on charge of cotton stealing
from the plantation of Ur. Baiadon, about
fite weeks ago ; George Rogers, colored,
charged with cattle steeling; Geo. Toole,
colored, shooting at another; Henry
Daniel, colored, misdemeanor.
The prisoners were confined in the up-
per portion of thebnilding; the trap door
at the head of the stairs being securely
fastened, prevented communication with
the lower cells. From appearances in
the jail yard on Tuesday morning, it was
evident that the prisoners were M*isted
in there escape by outade parties.
The flooring in the southeast corner of
tho jail, fronting the street, being very
much decayed, could be easily moved
out of the way, and the outsiders assist
ing in the work of escape 6eemed ap
prized of the fact. They dug nnder the
stockade next to Mr. Cameron’s cabinet
shop, and getting over, perhaps we bad
better say under, this obstacle, they com
menced burrowing nnder 4be jail at the
corner above mentioned, digging up the
heavy stakes driven there by the Sheriff
to protect the weakness referred to, and
tearing away the rotten timber, succeed
ed in effecting an entrance. They then
took an iron bar from one of the wiudows
with which they wrenched off the lock of
the trap door—permitting the prisoners
to reach the entrance and make their
escape.
is not known what direction they
took after leaving the enclosure, as no
tracks could be seen, but as the prisoners
are all residents of Sumter and have re
latives aud friend* here, it is probable
that they are larking about the county.
So far no reward has l>een offered for
their apprehension,
The Sheriff has in possession a spade
id hatchet, the tools with which the
work was performed. He also found on
the ground near by a coarse comb and
fishing line, which articles he hopes the
owner will call for immediately as he is
tired carrying them, besides, be is anxious
to interview him.
But little surprise was manifested by
our citizens when they heard of the
“leave of absence” taken by the jail-birds,
as most of them wero well aware that
the jail was insecure, and that almost any
persevering prisoner incarcerated within
its wall could cosily get out without
ie assistance of friends.
The last Grand Jury saw the evil aris

Mr. Editor:—As a citizen having the
interest and prosperity of the county and
the financial condition of the same in
view, I feel it necessary to ray a few
words in behalf of Joseph W. Mize, the
preseut efficient and capable Tax Receiv
er of the county. From the time be was
elected to the office, his acta in said of-
ro open to a fair and candid investi
gation , and the resuls will be that, for
competency, reliability, and a just dis
charge of the dntioa of «uid office, he
has had no equal. On his first election
to said office, ho was firm and energetic
in the discharged his duties, requiring
from all a full and just return, increased
the amount of taxable property to ovor a
million of dollars, and made the retui
of taxable property largely in excess of
any ono else that ha* filled the position.
He has done it so successfully that all
honest, candid and impartial citizens de
sire that he may be retained in office.
Let the 3J of November speak in tram
pet tones the efficient work of J. W.
Hize in behalf of the Democratic parly.
Firm and decided was the stand taken,
and openly and fearlessly he worked
the success of the party—no dodging or
skulking of duty. His work and energy
added a great deal to send the gallant
Cook to C oogress. Shall we ignore his
services? Shall we put him away for
others and try inexperienced and nn
learned officers? No! Lot well enough
alone, and keep ono capable sod worthy
of the high trust that he fills eojreU. So
let ns stop tli9 opposition to a good pub
lic servant, and elect him unanimously
as the Tax Receiver of 8umter County.
Cotton Steauxo.—A negro man in
the employ of Mr. R. Smith, who runs
one of Capt. J. A. Cobb’s plantations in
this county, was detected last Friday in
making off from a field with a sack of
cotton weighing abont 100 pounds. He
dropped the cotton to prevent detection,
bnt Mr. Smith got possession of it and
subsequently got Sheriff Wheeler to go
out and arrest the thief and bring him to
town. On Monday the negro was exam
ined before a magistrate and committed
to jail to await a trial.
“ Our thanks are due and aro hereby
teudered to the Sumter Republican and
Rome Courier for a late iustauce of their
high appreciation of onr labors in com
piling returns of the recent Congression-
elections in this State. The Republican
by the way, is a singularly appreciative
paper—none more so in the State.”
We find tbo above paragraph in the
Macon Telegraph & Messenger of tho lUtb
in?t. Had the kid gloved editor who pre
sides over the “Georgia Press” depart
ment of that paper temoved the mote
from his own eyes before he penned the
item above, he would then have been
able to discern more clearly, that the ar
ticle referred to as published iu this pa
wns not intended ns our own, but
that of /he Atlanta Constitution, from
which paper tho Telegraph <f? Messenger
obtained the sune information. Look to
your own clippings from your Georgia
exchanges, aud you will have less cause
for complaint against your coutt mpora-
for publishing items without the
proper credit. If there is a paper
Georgia that draws upon its exchanges
for items and appropriates them to its
own columns without credit, that puper
tho Telegraph «fc Meseenger, notwith
standing there are four editors on tl
paper. As “singularly appreciative”
the Republican may appear to the kid
glovo gentleman of the Telegraph, h©
draws heavily from ita columns for the
local news of this section, making it np
pear that he derives the information from
other sources.
We are not surprised at the Telegraph
<fc Messenger thanking os for publishing
any of its articles, as it is str seldom tlm'
we come across ono from that paper that
can appreciate, they ought to feel
thankful to us whenever we honor apy of
their articles with a place in our columns.

Mu. Editor : Will you allow mo the
space in yonr paper to remind our peo
ple of the claims of Sonny Smith to the
office of Clerk and Treasurer ?
Before be was the required age he for
sook family, home and friends, and
shouldered bis musket in the defense of
oar people aud country. After having
recovered from his first wonnd be
turned to his post, and in the dit-cliarge
of duty, he thero received the terrible
wonnd that caused the loss of a limb.
If it be true that service to our country
constitutes merit, let me ask, in all earm
estness and sincerity, Mr. Editor, if
Sonny Smith doe3 not merit some re
compensation at the baods of his fellow
citizens.
In the ranks of the brave old Sumter
Light Guards, aud in the discharge
self-imposed duty he became a cripj ie
for life. While we all know that he
not a vuorieil man we all know that he
has to care for a family, and I do earn-
itly hope the citizens of Americas will
show their appreciation of his claims and
competency by electing bim Clerk and
Treasurer, and thus pat the seal of their
condemnation upon monopolies in office.

The Pcosfects of the Negro.— We

been sent South with a view to give as

In seeking material the correspondents
have not confined themselves to the ci-
tics, nor to the principal lines of railway,
nor even to tLe lines of railway at all,
but have penetrated into tho remoter re
gions, which the currents of ordinary
travel do not reach. Coming from snch

Our City Finances — As tho voters of
the city will soon bo called on to vote for
members of Council, it Las been sug
gested that the present Board will do well
to make a public exhibit of the present
financial condition of the corporation.—
The people who aro tax payers desire to
know forthwith, what is the present in
debtedness of the city, and wliut the
means in the bunds of the Treasurer to
meet it. Come, gentlemen, giro an ac
count of your stewardship, that in the
coming election, every citizen may know
whether to give the plaudit of “ well
done faithful servants,” to the present
Mayor and Council, or to cast about for
change of corporation rulers.
