looked very mnch higher were it not for
the heated state of things. Even now a-
rtays there is a paying attendance of 20,-
000, which looks as though the people
were bent on feeing things in spite of
the state of the weather. The fact is,
however, that the exhibition grounds are
far more pleasant than any other part of
the city : The main building, covering
snch an extensive surface, with its many
openings and high ceilings; is in fact
quite a pleasant place to promenade in
this hot weather. Besides the cool cor
ridorsof Horticultural and Agricultural
Hall, with their numerous fountains giv
ing exbileralion to the atmosphere ; there
are numerous nooks and glens, with
shady benches, and streams running
through, which form very pleasant re
treats, and which arc doily frequented by
the weary sight seers who retire thither
at noon to eat their lunch and listen to
the mnsic of the orchestra which is al
ways in attendance.
The grounds form a beautiful park in
themselves. Sprinkled here and there
with shady trees,—covered with a lawn,
tho grass and flowers on which is the
finest and most beantifnl ever seen,—ar
ranged in fancy shapes, and intersected
by streams and walks,—beepanglod with
nnroerons fountains and waterfalls ; with
lakes Isrge snd small snd shady banks,—
altogether it is an exquisite pietnre, and
many a one prefers a cool ramble over
the grounds to the great sight seeing in
