Early one morning
from my Bleeping couch
by the loud roar of cannon on the sum
mit of Pnncli-Bowl hill, whose vibra
tions jarred the city’s very foundations.
I turned on my pillow, but tho shots
continuing to crack, I concluded that
some piratical fleet had attacked the
city, and were bombarding the wharves.
i hastily attired myself and wen
down to offer my services as general, o
anything to defend the ally':
Ueaching tho sticet. 1 f<
and poster* placarded at t no corner ;
announcing that a member of the royal
family had suddenly died.
The body was laid in state at the
king’s palace, and viewed by the whole j
city, pafsing in single tile through the j
palace hall. I walked out to the pal- .
ace to pav tribute to the roval dead.
He was laid out on a silken conch, and
dressed in full royal uniform and badges
of honor. He was a handsome man, :
i noble looking form. As he lay
picsented the finest looking corpse 1
ever beheld.
< hit in tho palace grounds were as
sembled thousands of natives, and at
intervals this vast concourse joined in
a chorus of heart, rending wails, sobs
and lamentations, which were kept up
through the day, and receiving Iresli
recruits of mourners, who continued
the sad death-wail at the top of their
voices thfonghout the night; theories
rose high abovo the roar of the ocean’s
surge that moaned and beat over the
coral reefs with loud uproar.
These scenes were repeated night

1 it ••l<l Hawaiian times, when a chief
died, hundreds of natives were slain
and hui i>i as sacrifices; and for weeks
the stiivivors would inflict the .most
horrible self-torture, and suffer the most
excruciating pain. Knocking out teeth,
breaking limbs,plucking out eyes, tend
ing their hair, tearing their flesh, burn
ing their feet, and tnal-treating their
bodies among the inhuman hatcheries
practiced on these occasions,that make
a man shudder to contemplate.
To describe the rising and falling,
the variations, the guttural ring, and
the wild, strange, unearthly sound of a
Hawaiian death-wail is impossible; it
is indescribable, and beyond the range
of imagination or imitation. It belongs
only to Pacific islands. When a thou

away with show and display.
The royal corpse was put in alcohol
and preserved a month, togive time foi
the grand preparations for an imposin'
burial. They generally expend soim

the elaborate arrangements had l>ct

dead arrived. The program of the oc
casion long as*a man’s arm, was scat
tered over the city. J was puzzled as
to where all the high-sounding dignita
ries were to l>e collected from.
tin the day of the funeral the natives
were roused to the profonndcst pitch of
excitement, and anticipation stood on
tiptoe. The town was wild with ex
pectation. Natives had flocked in from
the other islands, and from lar and
nea;. The mountains ha
their inhabitants, and the
oil her living freight, and the whole
archipelago was abandoned t*. he on
hand at the royal interment.
Karly in the morning the town was
alive; the streets were jammed, wedged
and filled with people of all sizes,
sexes, ages and conditions, to their ut
most capacity; and a weasel could
hardly get passage in the king's high
way. At eleven o’clock the funeral
train began its march from the royal
palace, headed by the king’s band, dis
coursing mournful martial strains, fol
lowed by the kingdom’s entire army,
infantry, cavalry, navy, artillery and
other sources of defence led by their
fine uniforms, shone like emperors.
The captains outdid the king himself
in gilt stars and plumes. A seargent

nontenant-tieneral. You could not
distinguish a general from a corporal.
