SCRIBES TH* HraRTRRRDIRO DEATH
of Artist Rici~Pu*j of to*
Rrscciro Flirt.
St. John, N. F., Jolj 18.—Sergeant
Long, of the Greely party, *
the first to respond to the we
of the steam whistle, says that he and
Sergeant Brainard were the first to
hear the sound and they helped each
other to crawl out of the tent.
When Sergt. Long got clear of the
entanglement of the teat which had
been swept to the ground, he rows to
his feet with great difficulty and suc
ceeded in clambering up. t* a rack that
gere the moat extensile view in that
neighborhood. Sergt. Brainard went
back, bnt Sergt. Long stayed, looking
in every direction for some strange ob
ject. ' At length he saw an unwonted
S ht, a large blaek object abcnt a
le distant, whieh at firat looked like
a rock, Tint he knew that there w*«
none there. Suddenly the steam lannch
changed ita course and Sergt. Long
reoognized the approach of the rescuers.
He came down tram the rack} went to-
held it for about two mlauUa tin his
strength gave out, and it fell again to
the ground. He then advanced totter-
ingly in the direction of tbe little
steamer, and soon the warm hand of
Capt. Ash had grasped his in greeting.
COXXKLL TOO WEAK TO mSAUZK IT.
Maurice Connell, who is still exces
sively weak, said that for acme days
after his rescue he had no recollection
of anything that transpired. He did
not bear tbe awakening scream of the
whistle. When his comrades shook
him from his prostrate position in the
camp and told him that succor was at
hand, he wildly exclaimed, "For God's
sake, let me die in peace.” A tea-
apponfal of brandy applied to bis lipa
c*led back tbe fleeting lile-spark, for
Connell could not have survived mord
than a few hours. Ho’ was by far tbe
weakest survivor, and the strongest
must have succumbed in forty-eight
hours. Tbe story told by Connell from
his recollection of their starvation ex
perience is simply heart-rending—how
they burned the hair off their teals, cut
them into strips, boiled them into a
stew and ate voraciously of them till
their stomacha rebelled and nausea and
weakness ensued. Iu several cases
nature gave no eall for twelve, fifteen
and even eighteen days, and then a
bloody hemorrhage and consequent
weakness ensued, prostrating the vic
tims for aoveral days.
FIUIITIHO AOAIRST FBCEZIXfi.
The difficulty of keepiBg heat in the
body was great. Tho rule of the camp
was to permit no one to sleep longer
than two hours. He was awakened
ronghly and called np to ahakw himself,
beat bia bands, ponndhia feet and re
store circulation. This was found ab
solutely necessary to prevent torpor and
possible death, the usual accompani
ments of intense cold.
Commander Schley has received
■tractions from the Secretary of the
Navy to remain at St. John till there
are twelve iron caskets constructed

plorers. The survivors are all doing
well, bnt are still weak and suffer from
nervous prostration. - Lieut. Greely
has improved from 120 pounds weight
on June 22 to 169 pounds to-day.
