Nrw York, October 1.—The trustees
oi the Peabody educational fund open-
«d their annual session to-day at tbe
Fifth Avenue Hotel. There were pres
ent Robert C. Winthrop, president;
Hamilton Fiab, Gen. U. S. Grant,
William Aiken, William M. Evarte,
Chiel Justice Waite, Henry R. Jack-
son, Col. Theo. Lyman, ex-Presi-lent
Hayes, Thomas C. Manning, Anthony
J. Drexel, Samuel A. (ireen, James
D. Porter and J. L. M. (Tarry, L L. D.
Dr. Curry, the general agent, present®
ed his report, showing the following
distribution of the income of the fnnd:
Alabama $5000, Arkansas $2,050,
Florida $2,100. Georgia $4,900,
Looiaiana $*2,C45„ Mississippi $3,650,
North Carolina $6,675, South Caro
lina $4,400, Tennessee $13,475, Texas
$5,750, Virginia $6,200, West Vir
ginia $3,850—total $59,995. The “
port was accepted.
The treasurer’s report, among other
things says: “The first work of the
fund was to aid in the establishment of
_ publis school system. That being
unalterably accomplished, the obvious
doty now is to look to the character of
the schools, so as to co-operate most
efficiently in making them better. It is
gratifying that public sentiment, hav
ing been won to tbe fnvor of free
schools, is now logically directed
their elevation, which, is of course
wrought through the ngenev of better
teMhing.” The report then speaks
highly of the improvement recorded in
the public schools, normal schools and
tesenert's institutes all OTer the broad
field where the fond operates. The
