DESIGNAEEH BY
[From tbe Detroit Free Press,
Fifteen or twent j of you boys get on
yoor old clothes and come with me in
to the paint factory, and we will learn
some secrets worth knowing.
To begin with, what is' white 1<
which is the basis of nearly all paints?
••Don't know.”
It would be odd if you did. Now and
then you may find some one to tell you
that the same lead yan mold into bul
lets is the white lead yon see in thi
paint pots, bat yon will ask a great
many people before you 6nd one to ex
plain the procees ot mannfactnre. Let
ns follow it oat.
Iron is melted into what is called
“gips” for shipment and for convenient
nse. It is the same with lead, only the
"pigs” are not ai large and heavy.
The first step in the mannfactnre is to
corrode the lead. We will take what
called the "old Dutch process,” be
cause that makes the best article. The
'pigs” are tossed into a melting fur
nfice, and when reduced to a liquid
state the metal is drawn off into molds
which are called "buckle-molds.” The
lead thus molded is called a "1 tickle,'
being a little round cake nearly
a saucer, bat not so thick, and per
forated in many places.
These "bncklcs” are carried by
endless belt and dropped into earthen
jars of various sixes. At the bottom of
each jar is a small quantity of acetic
acid, When a jar is fall of "buckle*''
when have been dropped in without
gard to order, it is removed to the c
roding house. Here the jars are placet
in a row, covered by boards, theboardi
covered by two inches qf tanbark, and
then another coarse of jars is added
all the room is taken up. There is
nothing more to do foT ninety day
exoept to wait. The acid at once be
gins its work on tbe "buckle*,” and
corrosion is tbe result. It isn't the
acid direct, bat its fames, and the per
forations of which I spoke permit the
tames to get at all parts of the little
cake.
At the end of ninety days the lead
should be corroded. The "buckles”
are then bleached 1 out until they look
like crackers, and will crnmble to
pieces at the touch. The same acid
which has befriended ns in tho corro-
is now onr worst efaemy, and
most be got rid of. Haven’t fun rob
bed yonr band along the clapboards of
a house and found it smeared with
white powder? Well, that house was
painted with lead from which tho ace-
tie acid was not thoroughly washed
