THE QUEBTION SETTLED
The question of having a tourna
ment some time this spring has creat
ed considerable talk among our gal
lant firemen^o much so as to take the
matter in hand and try their lock in
getting up subscriptions for a tourna
ment. Ttie committee appointed by
Wide Awake and Mechanics, to
solicit contributions from the citizens,
reported at the meeting on Monday
night last, that they had canvassed the
city thoroughally, and that they had
something in the neighborhood of five
hnndred and fifty dollars subscribed
and thought they could easily get
The matter of having a tourna
ment was freely discussed between
tho two companies in joint session,
and upon motion it was unani
mously voted to have it. Com
mittees were appointed to mako all
necessary arrangements aud also
fix the time of having the same. The
cost of -the tournament, including
prizes and a banquet, is estimated at
about seven or eight hundred dollars.
This tournament will no doubt be a
grand affair, for we well know that
firemen will spare no pains in
making this occasion a grand success.
This tournament is due to our firemen
because they have labored so hard

have so often destroyed thousands of
dollars worth of propeity in our city,
and have often funght the enemy and
gained the victory. Give honor to
whom honor is due, and this is duo to

Milton Nob!#*.
This extensive known commedian,
being unable to fill his first engage
ment on Wednesday appeared at the
Opera House on Thursday night. Hi
was greeted by a full and enthu-ias-
tic house: The audience went with
the expectation of being pleased, and
an audience seldom allows itself to be
disappointed.
The new play “Live and Law,
which Nobles himself Is the author
was put upon the boards. We confess
to a disappointment In this play. It
has but little merit in plot, and none
in literary character. It seems to
have been written mostly to di-play
Milton Nobles in bold outlines and to
-onfuse the audience as to the rest ol
the players, by having a multiplicity
of actors and a minimum of necessity
fir their existence. It has not that
f esb, side-pHtting, if somewhat gro
t*-sque, humor that characterizes his
auterviewa” aud “Phoenix.” .On
the contrary his play is rather, som
bre. Again, while the troupe is ex
cellent, as strong an one a« has been
here this season, it was quite patent
that Miltcn himself was not en rap
port with his play. This no doubt is
only temporary. But the worst fea
ture of the entertainment was the at
tempted imposition on the intelli
gence of the audience by cutting a part
of the play. It was quite evident
that a considerable part of the first
act was chopped off. Nobleela oneof

in the history of the city. We have
good, lively, efficient companies. It
is due to them that they should cele
brate once a year. Their labor Is the
worthy of commendation in that
it is voluntary. They should be
couraged in their organization and a
competition for the reward of merit
only increase their vigilance,
their spirit, their enthusiasm. Again,
it is due from Americus to her sister
cities. Our companies have been in
vited and have accepted the proffer
ed hospitalities of sister cities, and
gone to participate in the triumphant
tournaments of the knights of the
spanner and the pipe.
Again it would add to the dignity
i our city by making a creditable
display, and calling the people from
abroad to view our enterprise and
thrift. It would not be a finan
cial failure. More money would be
spent by the strangers within
gates than would be lavished for
their proper reception. This, of
course, Is the most important consid
eration, but we use it to show that
o event, and for no possible rea-
should Americus foil to join with
vim into this plan of having a grand
firemanic tournament this spring.

Burglary.
Upon entering their grocery store
in the Hamll block on Cotton Ave
nue this Saturday morning, Messrs.
Brown A French found that the cast
iron clasp into which the lock bolt of
the rear double doors locked had
been broken by prising with an ax
or crowbar, and an entrance effected.
A closer examination revealed the
tact that the money drawer had been
entered and forty-five dollars in sil-
carried away. Some flour was
spilled in the back yard; but at the
time of going to press it is not known
whether any goods were stolon or
not. It is presumable that the bur
glar was not a stranger to the arrange-
moots of tho store, but no arrests
yet.
Trying to Suicide.
A youth from near Chokee, Lee
county reports that Mr. C. W. Dil
lard, a citizen residing near Chokee
had tried to take hfo own life. It ap
pears that he had been drinking until
he was so crazed as to ran his hone
up and down the road that led by his
house. He also had a bottle of strich-
nine which his friends got away from
him. He then got u dagger from his
trunk, intending, as was supposed to
destroy his lift) with that. HU dag
ger was taken away from him, where
upon he tried to cut his throat with
his pteket knife. Whether he
ceeded at last in taking his life, the
youth did not know. At last account
the neighbors had him in charge and
doubtless prevented any serious per
sonal violence.
