Living Out the Go*pci.
This Is something which every
Christian must be doing. It may bo
that we have little to givo towards the
support of Gospel Institutions. The
building of churches, the distribution
of the word of God, the carrying for
ward of missionary enterprises, most
depend perhaps more upon our pray
ers than upon our purees. Wo are,
possibly, not capable of rendering
very efficient service in the labor of
tho church. Wo are not “ant to teach”
in the Sunday sdiool, and it is more
for nrinciplo than from tho hppe of
profiting others that wo take any
snare in social meeting*. But there
is one thing every child of God can
do—By tho grace of God, all can Hvo
out tho Gospel. And ho who Ls earn
est striving to do this, is a workman
that nocdeih not to be ashamed.
This is tho best preaching, this is
tho highest style or preaching. It is

One can hardly read that without
remembering certain grandmother*
at home, just as much loved as she,
perhaps, whose aull, sad live* are
never brightened by any such gust of
pleasure as this. Americans can learn
much from these poor mountaineers.
Thou honor the dear old grand
mother. Time has scattered the snow
flakes on her brow, and plowed deep
furrows on her cheeks, bat is she not
still sweet and beeotiftd? The Ups
are thin and shrunken, but they are
the lips that have kissed many a hot-

they are tho sweetest lips In ail the*
world. The eye is dim, yet It glow*
with the soft radiance of holy love
which can noverfede.- The sands of
life are nearly run out, but feeble as,
she is, she will go further and reach
down lower for you than any other
upon earth. You cannot walk into a
midnight where she cannot see you,
you cannot enter a prison whoso bars
will keep her out; you cannot mount
a scaffold too high for her to reach,
that she may kiss you and bleat you
in evidence of her deathless love. If
tho world should despise and forsake
you, it left you by tho wayside to die
unnoticed, this dear old mother would
gather you in her feeble firms, and
carry you home and tell you of all
your virtues, until you almost forgot
that your soul was disfigured by any
vices. Then love her tenderly, and
cheer her declining years with holy
devotion.

Good Language. '
At soon as a child begins to lisp its
first broken sentences its education
should begin. Habits are formed
which will exist to a greater or less
degree throughout life. Such being
tbe case, the conversation of the older
members of tho family should be
carefully guarded, lest the little ones
hear and learn ex
pressions and slang, which, sad to
say, is so rife among oar young peo
ple of the present day. Tho servants,
with whom children spend much of
their time, should be chosen with
reference to this matter.' A mother
should feci it her duty to polar out
any grammatical mistaken madfi hy
them, and insist upon their language ,
being correct, respectful, and devoid
of slang at aU times. It is exceeding
ly difficult to break children ef hab
its once formed, and care in this di
rection will save much trouble and aa-
noyancc. One-way to cultivate the
ueo of language, and at the same time
to learn of the oocopatlons ot her
children, is for the mother to encour
age the daily narration of what they
have seen, heard, and enjoyed, and -
the telling of their little experiences.
The study of pictures, moreover, la
which every child delights, may be
used as a great provocation of lan-
guage. Children always love to look
at pictures, and can* almost ai-
always be induced to talk about them.
This study teaches them observation,
and how to accurately describe wbat
they see. When stories are read to
children they.should bo obliged to
reproduco them, using, as for as pos
sible, the language ortho book. The
memory is strengthened in this way,
a habit of attention is formed, and
