Four carts arc continually going
about selling it at three gallons a cop
ier; that is a peony for every three
gallons of water. The other wells
and pumas servo for washing and
nothing elve.”
What an illustration is this of Him
who »R the fountain of living waters!
* If there is hot one conduit in a
town,” says good old Flavej, “and
not a drop of water to be had else
where, then all the Inhabitants of
that town would repair thither for
water. In the whole city of God
tliere is but one fountain, and that is
Christ; there is not one drop of
righteousness, holiness, strength, or
comfort, to be hsd els where.’’
The prophets. In predicting the
coming of the Messiah, employed a
«ymboi: “And it shall come to
in that day that the mountains :
drop down new wine, and the
shall flow with milk, ami all the riv
ers of Jodoa shall flow with water,
and a fountain shall come forth of
the house of the Lord.” Joel 3: 18.
And again: “In that day there shall
ho a fountain ot«ned to the house of
David and to the Inhabitants of Jeru
salem for sin and uneleanneas.”
Zech.13:1. And Jesus himself sayii
“If any man, thirst, let Aim come

him shall never thirst; hot the water
that I shall give him shall be in him

a whole city should be depend
ing upon the well of one man, for that
which God has made as free as the
air we breathe, excites our surprise.
But no lets Important to .the life of
the sonl are the supplies of grace on
which \\ feeds. The thirsty soul
faints an I dies if these are. withheld,
lint then, is only ono fountain whence
these supplies are ever flowing.
There Is but Ono who dispenses the
“healing streams,” and that One Is
Christ.
Tl»e owner of the solitary well
which city of New York depended
would not dispose of the precious ele
ment without pay. How unlike to
Him who is the living fountain,
“whose blood flows freely in streams
of salvation!” IIow gladly would
the guilty sinner purchase that which
could “wash all his hIqs away!” Bat
He who alone holds this precious
treasure, the most valuable ever off
ered to man, offers it freely. Stand
ing by the living fountain, he cries,
“IIo, everyone that thirtieth, come
ye to the waters, and he that hath no
money; eomo ye, bay and eal; yen,
come, boy wlno and milk, without
money and without price.” Wtm
tliere ever dueh matchless generosity?
The amount of water in tho city

In that “well of waters” Is boundless.
It nevercan be exhausted. The whole
worid can come to it and quench their
thirst, and be cleansed from all their

where else. The streams In this de

* Theory of the Aurora Borealis.
Tho aurora boreal I is is probably
daily phenomenon, but only of a v
riabie intensity. Tho differences in
its intensity will account for its not
boing always perceptible. Tho at
mosphere Is constantly charged with
positive electricity, which being fur
nished by the vapors that rise from
the sen, essentially in tropical regions
the earth Itself is negatively electrix-
el. The recomposition or neutralisa
tion of the two contrary electricities
of the atmosphere and of the terres-
tlal globe Is brought about by means
of the greater t r less moisture with
which the lower strata of the air are
impregnated. It is in the polar re
gions, where the eternal ices that
reign there constantly condense the
arqaeons vapors under the form of
base, that this recomposition must be
brought about; the more so, an the
positive vapors are carried thither
and accumulated by tho tropica! cur
rent, which setting out from the
equatorial regions, where It occupies
tho most elevated regions of the at
mosphere, descends in proportion as
It advances toward the higher lati
tudes, until it comes In contact with
» the earth. It is thero, then, that the
discharges between the positive elec
tricity of the vapors and the negative
of the earth must essentially take
place, with accompaniment of light.
When sufficiently Intense, this pheno
menon of light announces that the
disturbed equilibrium has and Is be
ing relnstated'flnally in the nominal
distribution of Its electricity. This

phenomenon being electrical and
partaking of two kinds of electricity,
it follows that when the aurora is
very Intense, an equilibrium is sought
to be established by any conductors
in connection with the earth, hence
tho disturbance* to telegraph wires.
These disturbances vary In intensity,
and are manifested in places where
the aqrora Is not visible. The inti*
m»te and constant connection that
reigns between the phenomenon of
tho anrora borealis and terrmtial
magnetism led M. de llnmboldt to
designate under the name of magnetic
storm the whole of the disturbances
' that are manifested In the equilibrium
of the magnetic forces of the earth.
After a brilliant anrora borealis, we
may be sblc to recognise on the fol
lowing morning trains of cioods
