A SAD AFFAIR.
Col o. vrjfcrMj Wlfcl *
A he little to wn of Preston was thrown
iatoa statu of consternation Wednes
day evening, by the revelation of the
following tragedy:
Col. G. W. Davenport cuts his wife’s
throat and his own. This sad news
reached us this morning, and we give
» we have heard it. On the even-
of the sad occurrence, Col. Daven
port on reaching home, went to his
wife and challenged her for a parting
kiss, whereupon he took hold of her
and cut her throat and then ent his
own. Col. G. W. Davenport is one of
the best men in the county, and held
in very high esteem by all who know
him at home or abroad. His mind
ve switched off the track and
wild in his craze. The sym
pathy of the community is extended to
the immediate family and the connec
tions hero and elsewhere.
We nre pleased to learn that the
ounds are not dangerous, and both
re getting on as well as could be
pected under the circumstances.

pointed inquiry. “Yes,” she answered.
“Do you love me!” “Y-y-yes.” “Will

We do not like tho “Mother Hub

might do for the old grandmothers to

Many beaux and belles were present,

gay lothario, and was on that occasion
nearly christianized by the beanty

his attentions, and when the lady made
ready to depart she found herself in his
neighborhood with shawl and satchel.
The last she gave him in charge, while
she arranged her other gear, Lothario

humanity, until he shall cry out in all
the bitterness of his soul: Why all
this!
The shiftless and indolent must al
ways remain poor, liviaglike parasites
the industry of others, and always
complaining of their fate. Every
should eondnet his business by close
application and judicious means that
he might have something to lay np for
