We quote as follows from the Col
umbus Sun of Friday afternoon:
*Our traveling correspondent, who
was present at the Talbot county Cir
cuit Court on yesterday afternoon, re
ports that Judge James Johnson deliv
ered an opinion in favor of the uncon-
stitutionality of the law which makes
it a misdemeanor for one planter to
hire a freedman who is already under
contract to another. T wo cases of this
kind came upon the call of the crimi
nal docket yesterday and the day l»e-
Jore, and Judge Johnson no!pressed
them both. Judge Worrell, iu reply,
stated that during the sessoing of the
Supreme Court at Atlanta he heard
Chief Justice Warner give a decision
in favor of the constitutionality of the
law referred to. Judge Johnson called
for a copy of that decision, stating that
if it could lie produced in court he
would recognize it and bow to its au
thority; but in the absence of an official
and reliable decision of this kiud, he
should hold to the position he had as
sumed iu the matter. Ills reasons for
so doing, briefly stated, are these;
This law ah ridges the right of citizen
ship by inflicting a system of compul
sory labor upon a certain -class of per
sons. The Constitution says there
shall he no involuntary servitude • ex
acted expect for the cotninis>ion of
crime; yet this law, by its operations,
compels a freedman to remain with and
perform labor for a planter, a.though
he does not desire so to do, aud if left
to his free choice, would depart at once.
The compulsion consists iu using the
people of the neighborhood as a sort
of guard over the laborer, as it is made
a misdemeanor for any person to hire
or employ him. This, Judge Johnson
claims, puts the boot on the wrongfoot,
I have no doubt she was thinking then
Of her former lord, good soul that lie
was.
Who died the richest and soundest of I
men !
The Marquis of Carabas.
Meanwhile, I was thinking of my first
love, ■ i
As I had not been thinking of aught
for years,
’Till over my face there began to move
Something that felt like tears.
I thought of the dress she wore last time
When we stood ’neath the cypress trees
together.
In that lost laud, in that soft clime
In tiie crimson evening weather.
Ol that muslin dress (for the eve was hot)
And her warm white neck in its gol
den chain,
And li-r full, soft hair, just tied in a
knot,
And falling loose again.
And the the jasmin flower in her fairi-
young breast
(O, the taint, sweet smell of thijt jas
min flower)
And the one bird singing alone to his
nest,
And the one star over the tower.
I thought of our little quarrels and strife
And the letter that brought me back
my ring,
And it all seemed there, in the waste of
life,
Such a very little thing.
For I thought of her grave below the hill
Which the sentinel cypress tree stands
over,
Aud I thought “Were she only living
still,
How I would forgive and love her,”
is.
And I swear, a.<T thoughtliflier thus in
that hour,
And of how, after all, old things were
best, .fc ■ '
That I smelt the smell of that jasmin
flower
Which she used to wear in her breast.
It smelt so faint, and it smelt so sweet,
It made me crisp and it made me cold.
Like the scent that steals from a crum
bling sheet.
When a mummy is half unrolled.
And I turned and looked—she was sit
ting there,
In a-front box over the stage; and
drest
In that muslin dress, with that full, soft
hair
And that jasmin in her breast.

And the very first word that her sweet
lips 6»id,
My heart grew youthfn! again.
The Marchioness then of Carabas.
She is waiting, and young, and hand
some still, . •
And but for her--—well, well let that
pass —
8h^may marry whomever she will
But I will marry my own first love,
Witli her primrose face, for old things
are beat.
And the flower in her.breast I prize it
above *
The brooch in my lady’s breast.
The world is filled with folly and sin,
- And love must cling where it can, I say
For beauty is easy enough to win
But one isn’t loved every day.
