A Ghastly Outrage.—A day or

long buried, from one ccmetary to
another, when n son of the Emerald
Isle, looking upon the exposed mass of

rotted away, said : ** I have often
heard that if one would pull out with
his own teeth a tooth from the hold of
a corpse, he would never afterwards
bo troubled with toothache. I’m go

actually stoojied down, and, fastening

The chief argument made in favor
of doubling the Presidential salary was
that the President needed at least
650,000 a year to support his house
hold and maintain the state that his
august office demands. But this argu
ment assumes that nil the expenses of
the Presidential household are defrayed
out of the Presidential salary, which is
not the fret. The annual Congression-
, al appropriations for the White House
j and t he household are larger than the
| salary iftelf. and it is a fact worthy of
j being noted, that these appropriations
have limi three-tiroes a* large under
Grant as under Lincoln, as the follow

For Lincoln, 18t»4: For secretary to

tor contingent expenses of executive,
office, 82,000; for two night watchmen,

cies, §6,000; for repairing .summer re
sidence at the * Old £o|diers’ Home.”
83,000. Total for Lincoln, $22,000.
For Grant, 1863 For secretary to
