INCIDENTS OF CHRISTMAS.
The past week, in our midst, while
not marked with that excitement and
hilarity usual during Christmas holi
days—doubtless due to the hard times
—and falling very far short of what
Christmas was in the days of yore—
vet it was filled up with incidents and
occasions of |>eculiar interest and plea
sure.
The most prominent and interesting
among these were tiro Christmas Trees
at the Baptist, Methodist and Episco
pal churches.
ra Troupe;” the exhibitions on the
n:gilts of the 28th and 29th inst., of
“ Bill wick’s Grand Etheopian Min
strels”; on
V CHRISTMAS DAY,
a very interesting and entertaining
horse and dog exhihitionjon Broad st.,
by the celebrated Horse and Dog
trainer, Prof. ; this was a won
derful performance, showing the com
plete control of man over 1 least. Then,
THE “ATHENS r.I!AS8 BAND,”
under the efficient leadership of Geo.
Davis, which discoursed fine music
through our streets during Christmas,
making all Athenians feel proud of
this musical organization of our city.
THE COI,OREI> FEOrEE.
The usual festivities of the colored
people were noticeable, and what par
ticular! v struck us, was the apparent
small diminution hr their\nmnbers,
considering the recent much-ado about
emigration. From the spirit of con
tentment which seemed to be among
this class of Christmas enjoyers, wc
don’t think the subject of emigration
has troubled their minds much—cer
tainly no; to the interruption of their
love for the “ Pigeon-wing Fandango’'
and the regular, old-foshioned Christ
j mas break-downs. We predict that
most of their Westward bound fellow-
I freed men will lie glad to join the “stay
at homes" in their next Christmas fes
tivities.
THE “ TURKEY-SHOOTERS.”
Now ushers upon the scene onr
sporting friends, who having attended
tbs “Turkey Shootings” ad infinitum,
are seen returning to make their homes
happy—some with one, some with two,
ami some with even a half dozen head
less turkeys. „vWe presume the unsuc
cessful sports \Yt re consoled with the
reflection, that if they did not get a
turkey they got a double-share of egg
nogs.
THE FIRE-WORKS,
on (Christinas night, notwithstanding
they were of rather impromptu “get
up,” by the young men of Athens, was present week :
nevertheless quite a brilliant affair.—
The citizens, young and old, especially
the young and fair, were out to witness
nml enjoy this pyrotechnic celebration
of Christmas. Much attention is now
being paid the pyrotechnists, and our
Drug Stoi cs have made quite a run ou
linseed oil and lime-water, and anti
pyrotie salves generally. Now,

Christmas occasion.,
THE METHODIST CHRISTMAS TREE,
in point of Inanity as to the artistic ar
rangement of the many handsome and
elegant presents, as well as the selec
tion of the tree itself, exceeded any we
have ever seen. The beautiful and
■symmetrical Holly, as it gracefully
waived beneath its load of bright and
attractive Christmas fruits, surrounded
by a corps of happy and smiling schol
ars and teachers, presented a scene of
such brightness, cheerfulness and hap
piness as to carry the mind away from
the cold and dreary December season,
and with a perfect . Spring-like fresh
ness and richness to enliven the whole
scene, was well.calculated to lead,one
to think that the Christmas Cycle
should l»e in the month of May.
the address of gen. wiei.iam m.
DROWN E,
on this occasion, w as chaste, elegant and
exceedingly appropriate. His deser ip-
tion of the first Christmas—the subject
of his address—was very fine. The
picture of Bethlehem of-iuden, with an
eastern view of Mount Moab and the
plains of the Jordan, with a northern
back-ground of tlic mountains of’Ju
dea, memorable as the region of Ka-
cluel’s tomb, relieved in the south by
tin; green sloping hills of Tckoah, fa
miliar as the scenes of pastoral life—
was most beautifully and descriptively
drawn. Then, how beautiful was the
description of that radiaDt brightness
which surrounded all tilings, causing
even the twinkling stars |which were
shedding their light o’er the Shepherds
upon the green hills, to hide their faces
ns the doors of Heaven stood ajar for
the egress of the Messenger of glad
tidings who announced that the Con
vent of the Nativity which enclosed
the humble innnger had become the
birth-place of our Saviour. This hap-

THE CHRISTMAS TREE OF THE EPISCO

was truly a magnificent affair. The
taste and elegance which our" Episco
palians ever di-play in the Christmas
decorations of their church, and in the
arrangement and “get up” of al!
tilings incident to the occasion, was
fully to be observed in their prepara
tion for the happiness and enivyinenl
of the members of their Sabbath
School. , ' u
While this was nn occasion of much
pleasure in Emmanuel Church, yet all
were called upon to'rcgret the absence
of their'much,loved Pastor, Dr. Drvs-'
dale, who was taken seriously ill during
the 7 o’clock’ mnninig sorviee •in his
church on Christmas day. He is im
