■ HOME-MADE COMPOSTS.
Returns generally concur iu report
ing an increasing use of composts
mixed on tlie farm. They especially
indicate, in the cotton States, a grow
ing conviction, confi'med by the re
sults of experiments, that it is far
more safe and economical to buy com
mercial iugrediments known to be
suitable to combine with manure and
other composting elements on the farm,
than to pay the extravagant price de
manded for commercial compounds,
which often prove to be adulterated
and comparatively worthless. In New
England, barn cellars are the rule
with the best farmers, (but unfortu
nately this is not the larger class,) and
muck, loam, or other material is
SHELTERING MANURE.
The author of “ Chester County
Notes,” in the Country Gentleman,
discusses the question as follows ;
•* Much has been written of the com
parative value of manure from uuder
the barn and that from open yard.
Many farmers will tell us that they can
see to a furrow where the manure
from under a shed was put, and that
one load of it is word) two from the
yard. I do not deny it, hut must
claim that this difference is not all due
to shelter. The manure from the
stable is always thrown under the barn,
and i« better than that formed in the
open yard, not only because more
grain is fed in the stables, but also be
cause it contains less straw aud no
corn stubbles.
In mauy cases the manure in the
open yard is washed by rain water
from the roof, which is allowed to run
off and take with it the strength of the
manure. If other things are equal
aud uo more water gets into the yard
than falls there and none of this is per
mitted to run out, I do not imagine
there will be much difference. If we
fed all our straw and cornstalks we
could then do without the open yard,
but so long us we depend on our stock
to incorporate them with the mauure,
wo must have more or less open yards.
Several of my correspondents com
plain of a loss of their horse manure
by licatiug and firefanging ; this is be
cause they keep it by itself. If mixed
with the manure from the cows or cat
tle stalls, this trouble will be avoided.
Manure from tbe horse stable and
sheep peu should be mixed with less
active mauure from other stables, aud
the whole placed where it will be trod
den down. I find it a good plan to
place the horse manure around the
water trough.”

same is true of the hog pen. In the
Eastern States, whenever wood-ashes
are made they are utilized, leached or
unleached, in supplementing farm-ma
nure, sometimes in composts, but per
haps oftener in the hill or drill.
Lime, with scrapings from the road
side, and whatever refuse is available,
enter into composts. In the North
ern Atlantic States, on the coast, ma
nure ou tbe farm is extensively supple
mented by marine fertilizers, as mus
cle-mud, sea-weed, fish refuse, &e., all
of which are very profitable. Iu the
neighborhood of cities, fertilizing mat
ter of all kinds, which accumulates in
them, enters largely into composts.
The return from Camden, N. J., for
instance, reports that thousands of
loads of street-sweepings from Phila
delphia, mixed with stable-manure in
the proportion of 2 to 1, are used as a
highly valued fertilizer. In the
Southern States mineral or other com
mercial ingredients enter more largely
into composts with cotton-seed and
farm manure. Edgecomli, N. O., re
ports a system of composting, which,
though it involves a combination of
elements not in accordance with re
ceived opinions, has produced the best
results for more than twenty years.
The ingredients are soil or subsoil, (of
ten more valuable in composting than
worn) soil,) not too sandy, cotton-seed,
or any material which will fermeut,
any animal manure, and shell-marl,
lime, or ashes. The proportions are
about 1 bushel of cotton-seed (or its
equivalent in other vegetable manure)
to 25 of earth, 5 of unimal-nmuure,
and from -10 to (50 of marl or lime;
all to be thoroughly mixed. Our re
porter lias linds which he has cultiva
ted iu this way for mo'c than twenty
years, ami they are more productive
now than at the beginning. The gen
eral conclusion in the county is, that
the iiesl results are secured from farm-
manure* by composting them. Fair-
field, S. C., reports that dissolved
Loot-, ground ami made soluble with
sulphuric acid, added to cotton-seed,
