f and Cleopatra.^
' poem was writtenby Gen. Win.
. Lyttle, U. S. A., who fell on the bloody field of
Chickamanga. He was buried with hoaorf by the
Confederates, and these verses obtained a wide
circulation in the Southern press, with honorable
mention of bis name:
I am dying, Egypt, dying,

Aha the dark plutonlan shadow*
Gather on the evening blast, 1 * '» f '•
Let thine arms, ob, queen ! support me,
Hush thy sobs and bow thins ear,
Hearken to the great heart secrets
y I Thou .and thou alono must hear.
Though my scarred and veteran legions
Bear their eagles high no more;
And my wrecked and scattered gallies,
Strew dark Aetium's fetal shore;
Though no glittering guards surround me
Prompt to do their master’s will,
I roust perish liken Roman-
Die the great Triumvir still.

Let not Cesar's servile minions
Mock the lion thus laid low ;
*Twas no foeman*a hand that slew him,
’Twas his own that struck the blow.
Here, then, pillowed on thy bosom,
Ers his star shall lose its ray,
* Him who, drunk with thy care***,
w Madly flung a world away.
Kind Hearted.—A. man of Fort
street east, going home at a late hour
in the [night, saw that the occupants
of a hoipo standing Hush .with the
street had left a window up, and he
decided to warn them and prevent a
burglary. Putting his head into the
window, he called out:
“ Hello! good peop !”
That was all he said. A whole pail
full of water struck him in the face,
and as he staggered back, a woman
shrieked out:
‘ Didn't I tell you what you’d get if
you wasn’t home by 9 o’clock ?”—He-

STENOGRAPHY BY MACHINERY.—
Should the bese plebian rabble,
Dare assail my lame at Rome,
When the noble spouse, Octavio,
Weeps within a widowed home,
Seek her—say the gods bare told me-
Alters—sugurs—circling wings—
That her blood, with urine commingle,],
Yet shall mount the throne of kings.
And lor thse, storeyed Egyptian,
Glorious sorceress of the Nile!
Light the path to Stygian horrors
With the splendors of thy smile.
Olre this Cesar crowns and arches,
let his brow the laurel twine,
I can scorn the Senate’s triumphs,;
Triumphing in lore like thine. *

The Newburyport Herald relates
that recently a benevolent gentleman
from Vermont applied to a Boston

your railroad men, snstained by the
people and the courts. I have also
lived in Turkey, and had much inter

Glorious victim of my magic,
Havt I dragged thee down to hell,
Fallen chieftain! Unthroned monarch !
Loat through doting love for me!
Fast on shades of night eternal,
Wings my soul it* flight to thee!
Cl Cwsar shall not grace his triumph
With proud Egypt’s captive queen!
8oothed to sleep by aspic kisses,
Soon my heart on thine shall lean ;
Soon my life, like Lotus blossoms,
8w!ft shall glide on Charon’s stream ;
Clasped once more in thy embraces,
Love shall prove an endless dream!
Iras! Charm tan! Bind my tresses!
Place the crown above my brow!

that Georgia will work out her original
destiny after all. One of the prime
objects in settling the colony was to
produce silk.” It then goes on to
speak of the specimen of silk recently
brought to this city from Meriwether

sufficient progress will be made in silk-

to make a fine exhibition of silk at the

None shall moot his smile before me,

Octavla’s tears may prove her widowed—
Cleopatra'* still his bride!
Seel Hy courage claims the title—
Closer press the aspic fangs ;
Memories of his quk-keniug touches
Sweeten now those deadly pangs !
Honor, manhood, glory’s teachings,
All he bartered for my smile.
Twined his heart strings round my Ungers,
Vibrant to the touch the whi>.
Followed fast my silver rudder,
Fled from Csesar’s scornful eye,
Heeded not his bleeding honor,
Glad upon my breast to lie ;
Then I sna.ed him in my meshes,
Bound him with my wily art.
From the head of conquering legions
.Snatched him captive to my heart.

Faint my heart, and weak iuy knee ;

There is some odd fact behind the
Granier-Gambetta challenge and re
fusal. The quarrel was with Paul de
C’ussagnac, the noted duelist, and the
challenge was from his father; and
people in Paris wonder what it means.
M. Cnssagnnc, who challenged Cam-
betta, is sixty-eight years old, but
writes that his arm is still strong
enough to defend his honor. As
Gambetta declines to fight, this
natious old gentleman says he will use
his boot on him.—New York Herald.
