CHEATED HIM IS TRADE TO
HA YE HIS LIFE.
" Ruins Adams, you are charged ou
this deckel \s\th disturbing the peace
and other unlawful practices, chief
among which is the selling of a wagon
load of shoulders to one Martin Ruffs,
for hams.” •„ •
“ I did it out of charity,” replied
Adams, a meek-looking man, gotten
up by nature to deceive.
“C'liaritv is a beautiful trait, Mr.
Adams,” said the Court, opening the
corkscrew and picking into the desk,
“ and we are told it is more blessed to
give than to receive.”
“ Wall, you see, Mr. Ruffs had just
emigrated from the land of wooden nut
megs and sawdust haras, and I was
passing by his place with a load of
shoulders, when lie hailed me with :
‘Those ate very line hams ain't they?’
Just as you sav, said I. Then he
came out and looked at them, dirab-
ing upon the wheels and lifting them
over. ‘ How many?' said he. One
hundred and sevr ntv five, said I.
• What are hams worth ?’ said he.
Sixteen cents a pound, said I; but if
you want the whole of them in the
wagon, you can have them for fifteen
cents. Then he l-mked them all over
again, and said, ‘ They are fine hams.
I’ll take them.’
Now, your Honor, I was just on the
point of telling him they were not
hams, but shoulders, when I saw about
half .a peck of grasshoppers chawing
away at his legs just above his l«>ot-
tops, and said I, to myself, these de
vastating cusses are eating up every
green thing, and if this fellow ain’t
thoroughly seasoned, his wife will he a
widow and his children orphans in less
than an hour!- And so you see, your
Honor, I sold him the shoulde-s ns
hams to save his life.’
* This i> a peculiar case,’ .said his
Honor, musingly, • and 900 in which
this Court must Sofomonize a little.
To sell the shoulders as hums, was a
clear eng- of swindle, and merits a

an act of charity uml deserves reward.

Savannah Weekly Morning Sews
Will be sent to any add raw six months for One
Dollar. This is one of the cheapest weeklies pub
lished. It is not a blanket sheet In which all sorts
of matter D promiscuously thrown. It is a neatly-
printed four-page paper, compactly made up. and
edited with great care. Nothing of a dull or heavy
character is admitted into the columns of the
Weekly. It is an elaborately compiled compen
dium of the best things that appear in the Daily
Nt**. The telegraph ic despatches of the week are
re-edited and carefully weeded or everything that
is uot strictly of a news character. It alto con
tains full reports of the markets; thus, those who
isve not the advantage of a daily mall, can get all
the nows, for aix months, by sending One Dollar to
the publisher; or for one year by sending Two
