Base Ball.—A very interesting
j game of Base Ball w is played yoster-
day afternoon between the “ Dixie ”
Club of Madison aud a picked nine of
our city. There was fine playing on
both sides and at some stages the con
test was very exciting. The result
was 23 to 6 in favor of Madison.
Personal.—We were honored on
Monday last with a call trom that
clever gentleman and promising young
lawyer Mr, Milton licese, of Wash

Hon. Judge Wm. M. Reese, and
nephew of our genial Col. S. C. Reese.
Match Shot, Tuesday, Aug. 30tb,
At Dr. Linton’s Meadow.—Seven
single birds, 21 yards rise, 80 yards
boundary, first three birds, use of both
barrels allowed and a bird killed with
second barrel to count as much us one
killed with the first, except in case of
a tie. After the third round, only
first barrel to count, and bird killed
with second barrel to count a miss.
The figures 1 and 2 show with which
barrel the bird was killed, 1 indicat
ing first barrel and 2 indicating second
barrel, 0 means a miss. Following is
the result:
1st. T. H. Dearing, 1, 1, 2, 1, 0,
1, 5—0.
2d. Bailev Thoma**, 1. 1, 1, 1,0, 1,
1—6.
3d. W. W. Thomas, 2, 2, 1, 1,0,
1, 1—6.
Bailey Thomas ami W. W. Thomas
tied as to number of birds, but Bailey
Thomas having kil'cd 6 at first shot,
to 4 at first shot by W. AV. Thomas,
the contest was adjudged in his favor.
Correction.—In our last issue we
staled, upon hear say, that Mr. John
Eborhart, formerly of Oglethorpe coun
ty, was the person who intended occu
pying the store room of Capt. E. P.
Bishop. We are informed that this is
a mistake, and now hear that it is to
be Mr. John R. Matthews, late of the
firm of J. R. & L. C. Matthews, of
this city. Again, we learn that it is
to be Mr. \V. W. Clayton, now of At
lanta, and once a most popular and
prominent citizen of Athens. AVell, in
the name of the entire Athenian curi
osity, who can it be ?
Can this be a ruse or strategy of our
most excellent friend, the Captain, to
attract attention to this, the best busi
ness staud in our city, and which should
have been occupied long since ? Well,
“ we shall see what we shall see.”
P. S.—Our Devil most sensibly re
marks, “ If the proposed occupant ex
pects to do a live business, such as will
make everybody’s hair stand on end,
while their purse strings unloose, why
the don’t he advertise ?"
\\ T e call attention to the advertises
ment of the Grangers Life and Health
Insurance Company, which we prepose
to say something about in our next
issue.

We learn that on last Friday, a large

in getting a whole chicken in his mouth
and was about to make way with it,
when he was killed.

the II. II. Tolbert referred to in our

with the maltreatment to Mr. W. S.

II. Tolbert, son of Mr. Jesse Tolbert,

Query.—How long will a Singer Sew
ing Machine last i
Answer.—Thousands upon thousands
have been in daily use for twenty years
and more, and are to-day in perfect or
der.
Query.—Why is it that the sales of the
Sieger almost equal those of all other
Machines combined ?
Answer.—Simply because the Singer is
the best, lightest moving, most durable,
and consequently cheapest Sewing Ma
chine ever offered to the public.
One Singer, costing (cash) $67.50 to
$72.00, will last as long as five of the
common so-called “ cheap 1st class,” but
in reality dear 2d chits Machines, which
are being offered to the public at $50.00
to $60.00.
Which is the cheapest, a Singer at
$67.30 to $72.00 cash, that will last 20 to
30 years, cost per year, $2.40 to $3.60, oi
a common to-eattea rhtnji Machine, costiug
cash $50.00 to $60.00, that will last 2 to

Narrow gauges and low fares are the
coming great features of railroad trans
portation in this country. Such a com
bination is eveiy where successful. The
new road between Boston and Lynn is
so profitable that the directors have
decided to lay a double track- And yet
the road is only three weeks old. As
an exarable of what a cheaply built
suburban road, runniog from a largo
city into the country and carrying pas
sengers at low rates, can do, the enter
prise has a great value.
