The fiorjj of S. A. Butler, an pivco io
»h P Southern Workman, is iutercHtioir and
instructive. He is a negro, ret.fed io the
Totted State?, bcinjz the son of a preacher
in Washington, lie was educated in j
Paris, and became master of the French,
German and Italian language*. Attract ,
int, Anson Uurtingatne’s attentioc, he
made him his private secretary when ap
pointed minister to China. Butler soon ,
hft the service of the embassy and held j
positions in one of the great American
r ading houses, and later with the Shang
hai navigation company. finally the
steamers of tho company were lought by
a number of Chinese merchants, who took
Huthr into their employ and gave him
full authoiity to reorganize the steam ser
vice as he thought host. Butler fully vin
dicated the confidence reposed in him, and
managed the affairs of the company ho ju
diciously that at the end of two years it
had gaiued a net profit ol 81,000,000 with
every indication of heavy dividends in the ;
future. The company now own thirty-six
steamers, and is becoming a formidable
rival of European -steamer owners, with
whom is destined to arise a vigorous Strug
glc fi>r supremacy on the Pacific, hull- r
is the moving spirit iu ail the entcrpr.ses
of the company.
Inn Chri-tmaa sermon delivered in the
It jiou Theatre, Philadelphia, on Sunday
evening last, the Itev. .John Agnew J. hn
aon said, among other things: “fherea
another good way to spend Christmas.
Pay your debts. Go und t-urptise sonic ;
body into thinking you are honest. Co
pay your tailor's bill as well as tho grocer,
and the baker, and tho washwoman, and,
above al', pay your hoard hill. It there s
anything mean and low and contemptible
in this world it’s the man who don’t pay
his bond bill. Why, I know a poor wo
mao who pawned the very clothes off her
back to get enough money to tide her
boardiug house over till pay day, and ;
when pay day did come the boarders all
tied and left her poor &in debt. It there’s i
any man in this place to-night who would
be guilty of such ao action let him stand i
up. We want to pray fur him Be man- i
ly. Don’t be small. Make this Christ-
mas long to he remomberod. Do good to ■
some and. Help some t ceily sufferer.
Raise up tho fallen. That’s (he way to he
hnppy and enjoy tho blessing of Christ
mas time.”
‘•Why, what are you putting that on
my feet lor,” usked a man with a heavy (
cold. “Why, to draw the cold out of '
jour head,” answered the considerate i j
nurse. “The deuce you say, I would , j
rather have it stay where it is than to be ! j
drawn the whole length of my body ” At '
any rate there is a more pleasant method 11

than that, £0 sod me a bottle of Dr.

THE SUN. ~
NEW YORK, 1384.
About sixty millions copies of the Sun have gone
out of our establishment during the past twelve
months.
If you wore to paste end to end all the columns of all
The Si nk printed and sold last year you would get a
continuous strip of interesting information, common
sense, wisdom, sound doctrine, and sane wit long
enough to reach from Printing House square to the
top of Mount Dopemiciis in the moon, then back to
Printing House square, and then three-quarters of tho
way back to the moon again.
But the Sim is written for the inhabitants of the
earth ; this same strip of intelligence would girdle the
globe twenty-seven or twenty-eight times.
If every buyer of a copy of the Sun during the past
year has spent only one hour over it, and if his wife or
his grandfather has spent another hour, this newspa
per iu 1883 lias afforded tin* human race thirteen
thousand years of steady reading, night and day.
It is only by little calculations as these that you can
form any idea of the circulation of the most popular
of American newspapers, or of its influence on tne i
opinions and actions of American men and women.
The* Sun is, and will continue to be a newspaper
which tells the truth without fear of consequences,
which g.■'*s at the facts no matter bow much the process
costs, which presents the news of the world without
waste of words and in the most readable shape, which
is working with all it. heart for the cause of honest
government, and which therefore believes that the Re
publican party must go, and must go in this coming
year of our Lord, 1884.
If you know Tin: Sun, you like it already, and you
will read it with accustomed diligence and profit dor
tug what is sure to bo the most interesting year in its
i history, if you do not yet know The Sun, it is high
time to get into the sunshine.
