Arlington Dispensary Illegal.
The Supreme court yesterday
handed down its decision in Ar
lington dispensary case and that in
stitution will now have to close its
doors. The court says ;
A municipal corporation which
has under its charter exclusive
power to “control and direct” the
sale of liquors within its limits has
no authority, under such a provis
ion, to organize a dispensary by
appointing commissioners and au
thorizing them to sell liquors under
certain terms and conditions pre
scribed in the ordinance. This-is
especially true when the people of
the county wherein the dispensary
is located had, prior to its organi
zation, adopted the local option law
which forbids the sale of liquors in
that county.
The illegal sale of intoxicating
liquors is a public nuisance affect
ing the whole community in which
the sale is carried on, and may be
abated by process instituted in the
name of the state.
There is a considerable discussion
of the question of putting a South
ern man on the Democratic presi
dential ticket next year. The
South has been furnishing the
Democratic majorities for these
many years and it would be but
justice to name a Southern man for
the head of the ticket. Now is a
good time to test the sincerity of
the declaration that the “war is
over.” If Yankee Democrats
won’t vote for a Southern Demo
crat then we don’t care a baubee
whether a Democrat is elected at
all. Barring the parceling out of a
few offices there is very little dif
ference between a so-called east
ern Democrat and a partisan Re
publican.
Randolph county is much excit
ed over a reputed coal find about
'six miles from Cuthbert. It is said
that State Geologist Yates, of At
lanta, has paid a visit to the scene
and says the mineral is there in
inexhaustable quantities, claiming
that it surpasses the bituminous
coal of the West Virginia districts
which for all purposes, is the best
soft coal now used in the world.
Blakely is the best little city in

should come to Blakely and Early
county to live and hustle.
The cane growers convention to
be held in Macon in May promises
to be a great affair. Delegates in
large numbers from all the cane
growing states will be present.
The United States Senate Tues
day voted to ratify the treaty with
the Republic of Columbia for the
construction of the Panama cana
by the United States.
We are informed that Mr. Del
Jones, of Fort Gaines, was arrested
the first of the week charged with
running a blind tiger in his store
in that place.
Be as cheerful as you can in wel
