New Methodist Church Dedicated.
The handsome new brick church
erected in Blakely by the Metho
dist congregation at a cost of be
tween $7,000 and $B,OOO was com
pletely paid out of debt last Friday,
an on Sunday, according to the
prearranged programme, Bishop
Warren A. Candler formally dedi
cated it to the service of the Lord.
It being also a celebration of
Easter Sunday, the Bishop pitched
the theme of his sermon upon the
resurrection ot Christ and his dis
course was directed along the line
of argument that if it be not true
that Christ be risen in the flesh
then were death the end of human
existence. The sermon was one of
the best we ever heard and Bishop
Candler made a most favorable im
pression upon our people. At the
close of his sermon, which though
somewhat lengthy, as befitting the
occasion, was not one whit tire
some, the simple ritual service of
the church was gone through with
and the building was formerly ded
icated to the service of God.
Bishop Candler also preached for
the congregation Sunday night, at
the close of which quite a hand,
some collections was given him
for the benefit of the Cuban church
fund. The services conducted by
Rev.Jßobert Kerr, a former pastor
of the chuich, Sunday morning
and afternoon were also highly in
teresting.
There were many visitors from
a distance and our Methodist
friends are justly elated over the
pleasant and successful manner in
which the exercises of the
day passed off.
The decorations of the church
were beautiful, symbolic of the
day, and bespeaking the handi
work of the gentler sex.
A protracted meeting is now in
progress at the church, the pa6tor
being assisted by Rev. Robert
Kerr and the presiding elder, Rev.
E. F. Cook, and other ministers.
