Memorial Day Observed in Blake! yv
Not in many years has tljere
been a Memorial Day in Blakely
that was in every way so success
ful as that of Monday, filled to the
brim with patriotism and
Recollections of the hallowed day
will return in after years fraught
with sweet memories of flowers,
grace and beauty.
An elaborate programme for the
day was prepared and carried into
effect in perfect harmony Prompt
ly at 3:30 the exercises began at
the Baptist church. The pro
gramme was as follows :
Opening Prayer —Rev. B. W. Da
vis.
Song- “Their country was calling.”
Recitation—“ Jacket of Gray”—
Miss Rebie Standifer.
Song—Today this hallowed place
we seek.
Reading—Mrs. Arthur Powell.
Address—W. L. Lee, of Columbia.
Recitation—“ Price of Peace,”—
Mrs. C. E. Boyett.
Song—“ Cover them over”—at the
cemetery while the children are
decorating the graves.
Benediction by Rev. B. W. Davis.
The oration by Hon. W. L.
Lee, of Columbia, was the particu
lar feature of the day. For nearly
forty minutes he held the vast
crowd by his eloquence. It was a
model oration for such an occasion,
high, lofty, no apologies for the
past, but a strong love for the
Union that is now indissoluble.
The speaker reviewed the occa
sion, spoke of it as the saddest and
sweetest day of the year, sad with
by-gone memories and sweet with
tender recollections of those who
had crossed the river, and upon
whose brow not a single crime had
rested. So now the beauty and
virtue of the sunny Southland gath
er the sweetest flowers to decorate
the graves of the loved dead. A
glowing tribute was paid to the
shoeless, hungry soldier, and also
the dead chieftain and generals of
the
speaker paid a grand tribute to the
Southern women and their fidelity
to those who had fought tor South
ern principles It was a grand
speech and worthy of the orator
and the occasion. The entire pro
gramme was perfectly carried out.
At the conclusion of the services
the mayor, chaplain and aids, the
orator and recitationists, the choir
and the Veterans, the Ladies’
. Memorial Association, the schools!
their teachers, and the large
concourse of citizens jharched to
the cemetery, where u salute was
fired, and flowers .placed upon the
graves of the dead, each
lovingly remembered by the living.
All praise to the noble women who
placed the marble headstones, and
noticeable also was the beautifully
decorated arcli at the cemetery
...
The wreaths for the graves, the
perfectly artistic church decora
tions, the excellently rendered pro
gramme, the order and solmenity
bespeak great credit to these ladies.
The stores and places of business
were closed during the services.
It was a day long to be remem
bered.
The grand jury of Early county
took the Wesleyan Christian Advo
cate to task for its attack on Judge
Sheffield. They characterized the
attack as “unjust” and “unwar
ranted,” which we agree to. The
writer in the Advocate was either
misled by some one who had a
grievance with the Judge or else he
was such an one himself.—Fort
Gaines Recorder.
Thanks of Memorial Association. J
We beg, through the generous
columns of your paper, to return
the sincere thanks of the Ladies’
Memorial Association to the pa
triotic citizens of Blakely, who so
kindly contributed in various ways
to commemorate the solemn anni
versary of Memorial Day. We
make most grateful acknowledge
ments to Mayor Jno. C. Chancy,
his aids and assistants, who so cour
teously escorted the orator through
out the day ; to Prof. A. G. Seay,
the efficient chairman ; to Rev. B.
~W. Davis, chaplain, for his beauti
ful invocation; to Mrs. C E. Boy
ett and Miss Rebie Standifer, who
recited two exquisite poems; to
Mrs. Arthur Powell, who read a
paper with grace and feeling; to
Mrs. Roscell Deal, and all who as
sisted her with the music; to Mr.
and Mrs. Walter Thomas, who en
tertained the orator in behalf of the
Association ; to the schools and
their teachers, the Veterans, and
all others who so largely contribut
ed to our success ; to Hon. W. L.
Lee, orator, whose soul-stirring ad
dress in honor of the dead Confed
erates, touched tender memories
and loving thoughts of all the Vet
erans, and received enthusiastic
applause of all who love truth and
patriotism; to all who donated
flowers, wreaths and all decora
tions. By order of
Mrs. S. E. Badger, Pres.
Mrs. Walter Thomas,
Recording Secretary. %
