Short Stops.
The baseball fan is enthused.
Blakely and Dawson go up against
each other this afternoon and tomor
row.
The Knights of Pythias will hold
their regular meeting next Monday
night. Work in second and third
ranks.
Mr. Julien E. Perry received a dis
charge in bankruptcy from the Dis
trict court of the United States by
Judge Newman, sitting in Atlanta,
Saturday.
The little baby of Mr. and Mrs. D.
R. Deal was taken suddenly and vio
lently ill Tuesday afternoon and great
ly alarmed his parents, but after a
few hours he was all right again.
Mr. W. B. Brannan, inspector of ru
ral free delivery mail routes, was here
Tuesday and Wednesday, going over
a proposed new route leading out east
from Blakely, with Bailey’s mill on
the line.
The News learns that Mr. T. F. Cor
dray is preparing to erect two or three
nice cottages for rent on Arlington
street, just east of the Brown resi
dence occupied by Prof. D. M. Wade.
Let the good work go on. Blakely is
comiijg with a vim.
Annie May Abbott, the little Geor
gia magnet, gave one of her puzzling
exhibitions at the school auditorium
Monday night. The crowd seemed to
have lots of fun and came away as
mystified as ever, with many explana
tions as to how she did the tricks.
There will be no services at the
Methodist church next Sunday, Rev.
W. H. Budd, the pastor, has an en
gagement to preach the commence
ment sermon for Andrew Female Col
lege at Cuthbert. Bro. Budd is rated
as one of the finest preachers in the
South Georgia Conference . and our
Cuthbert friends can expect something
good from him.
At their next meeting the Board of
Trade will take up the matter of a 4th
of July Barbecue or Picnic for Blakely,
with Hon. Hoke Smith or Harvie Jor
dan to speak. Should the Board de
cide that this is the thing for Blakely
just now. excursion rates on the rail
road will be secured and a great big
da3' for hustling Blakely will be as
sured beyond a doubt
We have been requested to an
nounce that there will be Presbyte
rian services held at the college audi
torium next Sunday at 11 o’clock a. m.
and again at Bp. m. Rev. Mr. Hagan,
of Cuthbert, will preach for the con
gregation at both services, and Rev.
R. D. Stinson, of Climax, will also be
here to assist in the services. Every
body is invited to attend.
The county commissioners held on
ly a brief sesiorf Tuesday and only
three members of the board were pres
ent —Messrs. Fort, Bush and Mosely.
County Surveyor Taylor was author
ized to compare the field notes of the
survey with the actual grounds of the
county line dispute between Baker
and Early counties at an expense of
not more than $15.00. No other busi
ness of public interest was transacted.
The concert during commencement
netted $39.00 for the Institute library
fund, with which the board of direc
tors will invest in some new volumes
suited to the needs of the school.
There can be no danger of making the
school library too Interesting. The
habit of reading should be cultivated
in the pupils and to this end it would
not be amiss to subscribe for one or
more of the popular magazines of the
day.
The Ladles Aid Society of the Bap
tist church will serve- Ice Cream at
the office of Clerk of Court J. T. Free
man next Monday night, the 12th
inst. In the afternoon, beginning at
5 o’clock, the children and any others
who may wish to come at that time
will be served. The proceeds of the
sales will go to the parsonage fund.
Go- out and patronize the ladies on
this occasion and help a worthy cause /
as well as enjoy a treat.

Mr. W. F. Dixon, of Greenwood, Fla\
is up on a short visit to his relatives
and old friends in Blakely. Way back
in the ’7os Will used to help us spread
ink over the forms of the Early County
News, and helped us to make life mis
erable for the birds, squirrels, fish,
&c„ around Blakely, and' it is always
a pleasure to meet up with him again.
Mr. Dixon says Blakely’s progress has
been wonderful since his last visit
here, some two years ago.
Blakely vs Dawson.
The baseball teams of Dawson and
Blakely will cross bats on the local
diamond this afternoon at 3 o’clock
and again tomorrow afternoon.
The Dawsonians arrived in the city
this morning prepared for the fray.
The Dawson boys have the reputation
of playing hot ball, and the Blakely
line up is now in better shape and the
boys are confident.
Harry Moses is expected to take his
place on the team today and pitch one
of the games for Blakely.
This being the real opening of the
ball season in Blakely the home team
should be given a rousing attendance
to encourage them.
The grounds are now tn good condi
tion and the grand stand has been cov
ered and comfortable seats arranged.
The prices of admission will be 25c
for everybody. Men who occupy seats
on the grand stand will pay 35c.
A Commendable Action.
County School Commissioner Jones
has an important notice to teachers in
the News this week. It is an offer of
the Board of Education to furnish free
railroad fare to twelve of Early coun
ty’s teachers, if they will attend the
University Summer School, which
opens in Athens on June 2Gth, or to
increase the salary next year o<" any
teachers from the county who will at
tend said summer school at their own
expense. This action of the board of
education in encouraging the teachers
to attend the University Summer
School is to be heartily commended.
The few weeks spent at Athens will
pove of vast benefit in better equip
ping the teachers for their work in
the school room. They will be put in
thorough touch with the very best
methods of educational work by
teachers of national reputation.

interest in the Central Drug Store.
Dr. C. T. Alexander will assist Mr. L.
M. Woodward in tke management of
the store in future When not engaged

Catcher Lawrence Baker returned
from Union Springs this morning,
where he played three games with the
Fort Gaines team against Union
Springs, Monday, Tuesday and Wed
nesday. The first game was won by
Union Springs, score 2to 1; the sec
' ond by Port Gaines, score 3 to 2; third
by Union Springs, score 5 to 4.
Drs. Parker & McDaniel,
popular dental firm, have opened a
branch office in Albany, and one or
the other of them will at all times be
in the Albany office. We commend
these gentlemen to our Albany neigh
bors as skilled in their profession and
worthy of confidence and esteem.

buying a lot down at Lanark by the
Gulf. The Blakely people are stuck
on this well known summer resoit.
Judge C. W. Sirmons, of Arlington,
was sporting his rotund anatomy in
the city Tuesday. His friend he T e are
always glad to see him in their midst.
Conductor Charlie Johnson, of the
Extension passenger service, spent
yesterday in Blakely looking after
some property interests he has in this
vicinity.
Dr. W. H. Alexander has sold a half
interest in the Central Drug Store to
his brother, Dr. C. T. Alexander. . The
old reliable will take on renewed life
under the double incentive.
Mr. M. T. Chipstead is on the sick
list this week. Marcine is such a uses
ful individual that his presence is
much mised from the business ranks.
Hope he will soon be out again.
Mr. W. H. Sinquefield, of Ashford, j
Ala., is in the city looking up the 1
records to assist Mrs. Griffin, of
Mitchell county, a deserving widow of
a Confederate soldier in getting a pen
sion.
Prof, and Mrs. L. J. Fowler and lit i

Haddock, Ga., where they will spend
a month with Mrs. Fowler’s parents
before going to Decatur for the bal

Miss Neta Gunn returned Tuesday

Architect Dillon, of Atlanta, spent
Tuesday in Blakely inspecting the
work done on the court house. The
general verdict is that Contractor Jay
is doing splendid work and the Archi
tects confirm the verdict.
Miss Lois Bower and brother, Paul,
arrived in Blakely from Whigham yes
terday and will spend some time with
their relatives and friends in Biakely.
They are stopping with Miss Ruby
Fleming and Master Alvan Fleming.
Messrs. J. P. Nelson and S. V. MannA
of Saffold, were pleasant callers at the /
News office yesterday. Mr. Nelson is
well known to many of our people
having lived for some years at Hilton
Station, and they were glad to see him
again.
