NEW PENSION LEGISLATION.
Pension Commissioner Lindsey is
sending out a circular letter through
out the State calling attention to the
fact that the legislature which con
venes next June will be expected to
enact such laws as will be necessary
to provide a pension for that class of
Confederate soldiers and widows of
Confederate soldiers authorized by the
Constitutional amendment ratified by
the people at the November election.
This new legislation will be expected
to provide a pension for every Con
federate soldier and the widow of ev
ery Confederate soldier (who were
married prior to January Ist, 1870,)
not worth over fifteen hundred dol
lars.
The Pension Commissioner calls
upon the Ordinary and Representa
tive and Senator to aid in getting up
a correct, list in every county show
ing the actual number of people, who
will probably be entitled to pensions
under the new legislation to be en
aicted, as the amount of pension to
be received by each pensioner is to
be fixed in the new law, and what
that amount shall be depends large
ly upon the number to be provided
for.
i He also asks all citizens who can
furnish any information as to ser
vice of soldiers to assist in the prep
aration of these lists, and that the
lists be prepared by June Ist so that
he can consolidate the information ob
tained for the benefit of the general
assembly.
It is important that this work be
done and be done accurately so that
there may be no chance of fraud in
the pension rolls and that they may
be rolls of honor as intended to be,
and that the State may not be bur
dened with improper claims for pen
sions.
It’s a wise statesman that knows
his own tariff bill. It Is predicted
that when the tariff bill which passed
the House last Friday gets through

know it and that it will here a hy

We have little admiration and sym
pathy for Castro, the exiled Venezue

he does not take up his abode in the
United States, we can't see what the
dickens the United States authorities
have got to do with his movements.

Wonder who got left at the April
Fool party down at Mr. V. B. New
berry’s Saturday night. Ha! ha! girls,
I know you feel bad. You must keep
your eye on the boys, for they are
sharp. If you had been left as many
times as Chums have you would know
hew to treat them.
