DR. JOHN KEATON SHOT.
Tuesday morning a telephone mes
sage from Kestler to Mr. \V. H. Good
win brought the news that Dr. John
Keaton, son of Hon. W. W. Keaton
had been seriously, if not fatally shot
by Mr. Jim Shaw, at Quincy, Fla.,
where Dr. Keaton has been practicing
medicine for some months.
We learn that the trouble originat
ed about Mr. Shaw's wife and Keaton 1
had come up to Kestler, but a friend'
came up and reported that everything 1
was all right, whereupon Keaton re- (
turned to Quincy, where he and his:
friend and Shaw had a meeting in
Keaton’s office Monday night and all
was amicably adjusted.
Next morning Shaw hunted up Kea
ton and asked him to come and walk
around the public square, so as to
show the people that all was serene.
with them. Arm in arm they walked!
around town until getting to a drug
store, where Keaton “set up” treats |
to some of his friends and bought some i
cigars and was reaching for his change,!
when, without any warning, Shaw
pulled a pistol and began shooting at
Keaton in the back —one shot
going through him in the region, or
the heart, two through his right arm(
one in his left arm, one of them going
between the two bones in the lower j
part of the arm, the other striking
the outside bone between the elbow
and wrist, clipping off a piece of the
bone and going through his right
shoulder. Keaton pulled his pistol
up in front of him in both hands and
attempted to shoot Shaw, but the!
shots he had received had so badly ‘
disabled him that he was not physical
ly able to pull the trigger to his gun.
Shaw left and went across the street ;
and drove off, saying he had killed j
Keaton, but if he had not, he would !
get up a crowd and take Keaton from
his room and finish him up.
Immediately, after learning of the
threats to take him out and kill him,
Dr. Keaton had some one to wire to
Kestler and the following citizens of
Kestler went down to his assistance: j
Dr. P. H. Keaton, Mr. Earl Hightower
and Judge P. N. J. Dozier in one auto
mobile secured from Arlington, and
Dr. R. P. Stinchcomb, Dr. L. C. Ward,
Mr. W. M. Bradley and Mr. H. C.
Bradley in Mr. Goodwin’s car, which
made the trip from Kestler to Quin-1
cy in two hours and forty minutes, j
part of the way in hard rain and all j
the way over a very muddy and slip
pery road.
The Kestler parties and officers
guarded Keaton’s room Tuesday night
to prevent any harm being done to
the wounded man, and as Keaton’s
friends were still apprehensive, they
released Mr. Goodwin and remained
i in the city.
All sympathy at first was with the
man who did the shooting, but later
! on public sentiment seemed to be j
i practically with the Doctor. A drum
i mer, who was in Quincy when the
:-.hooting took place, remarked that it
w r as a very cowardly act and so con
| ride red by the public, after all the
facts had become known in the case,
it is not believed by his physicians
that Keatons wounds are fatal and he
! was brought to Kestler and carried to,
i Dr. P. H. Keatou’s home, where he is
doing as well as could be expected.

1 We were a band of brothers true,
And time is thinning our ranks,
To God alone then let us look
And give Him all the thanks.
2 We are growing weaker and older;
Our numbers getting less each
day—
Then treat him as a friend and
i brother,
For he soon shall pass away.
3 We fought for the South and for
home,
And did nothing to bring disgrace,
And when we are dead and buried—
There is no one to take our place.,]
4 Then give him a welcome that is!
hearty
And lighten his cares of life;
Let him feel that he's not forgotten,!
As well as his dear old wife.
] 5 They ask to be kindly remembered
By those who are to fill their
chairs—
For their deeds on the field of bat
tle,
In your books as well as your
prayers.
i 6 The cause they fought for is lost,
Their battle flag folded forever,
i With tears in their eyes they view
it—
But can they forget it? No never!
7 But maimed and crippled for life,
They have no regrets for the
past.
They hope a ju-'t God will regard
. them,
And welcome them in heaven at
last.
8 I.et us hope they are meeting in
Heaven,
With angels to welcome them
there;
Where their hardships are all for
got en,
And be free from toils and care, j
9 Then let the Confederate so live,
That when our race is ran—
We may be called the noblest work
of God,
An honest and truthful man.

The Union Depot.
The piny, the “Union Depot,” which
is to be given at the auditorium Tues
’,ay night was recently given in Fort
Valley under direction of Miss Mar
garet Melick for the benefit of the
U. D. C.
The Fort Valley Leader had the
following to say of it:
The entertainment given for the
benefit of the Daughters of the Con
federacy on last Monday evening at
the auditorium was a success in every
sense of the word. There were sev
eral very pretty drills, which were en
joyed by the laTge crowd present.
The Kiss Kiss drill., given by eight of :
ihe Fort Valley young ladies, was es
pecially attractive.
The play, the Union Depot, was car
ried through without a hitch. Sev
eral characters in the play had adorn
■ c;l themselves in costumes that would
! have made a dog laugh. This show
demonstrates that we have some first
rate talent here.
The Union Depot gives ample room
: to the characters represented to dis
play a great deal of originality. There
were several of those in the play who
: did their parts in grand style. In
! fact the whole entertainment was good
from beginning to end.
| The entertainment was given under
the direction of Miss Margaret Me
lick. Miss Melick understands her
business. She had only one week iii
which to get up the entertainment but
with the cooperation of the local tal
ent, to give a fine show. We hope
Miss Melick will come again.
ATTENTION!
Mr. E. R. Duke has proved to be
the right man in Blakely. His man
agement during Mr. Sam Stein's
Crushed Sale has swept the tables
and shelves as the storm sweeps the
ocean steamer.
