NATION GOES “OVER THE TOP”
IN VICTORY LIBERTY LOAN.
.The fifth and last popular war
loan of the United States*has been
oversubscribed.
Although the approximate total
subscriptions will not be known for
nearly two weekes, figures available
show that the American people have
responded generously to the appeal
to “finish the job.”
Like all of its predecessors, the
Victory Liberty Loan suddenly jump
ed on the last day of the campaign
above the mark set as its limit. The
last day brought an avalanche of sub
scriptions which banks could not at
tempt to count until this week.
Treasury officials expressed the
•opinion that they would not be sur
prised to see the final figures go to
nearly six billions. Only $4,500,000,-
000 will be accepted.
Late Saturday Secretary Glabs is
sued this statement:
“While the official reports to the
Treasury department show only $3,-
549,638,000 subscribed up 'to . noon
on Saturday, unofficial advices from
the several districts indicate that
without any doubt the Victory Loan
is already largely oversubscribed, with
every district making a determined
effort to gather in every possible
subscription before midnight.
“Thus for the fifth time the coun
try has met the call of the Treasury
Department for the funds required
and the great Liberty Loan organi
zation has once again proved its
metal.”
Early County Falls Short.
Early county fell short of her al
lotment in the Victory Loan drive,
subscribing only $52,000 on a quota
of $141,250. Chairman McDowell and
his committee worked vigorously in
an effort ti put Early over, but did
not meet with the response which
should have been given tnem By
the people of the county.
Early and Grady were the only
two counties in the Albany zone
which' failed to subscribe their quota.

“Reaching Down”
The Salvation Army is based up
on kindliness. It “reaches down”
and helps to his feet the man who
has fallen. It has built its house
in the Street of Poverty and has
cast its lot with the friendless,
the homeless, the weak and the
l
lowly.
The Salvation Army is known to
the poor and the wretched of 61
countries. It speaks 37 languages.
It is found on the battlefield and
in time of peace it is found where
ever men and women suffer. It is
loved because it knows how to
“reach down.”
Will you “reach down" to help it
carry on its work in America? Re
fuse —and you turn your back upon
the unfortunate in your own coun
try.
