OTIS BRIDGES WRITES
ABOUT THE RHINE.
Mr. R. E. Allen recently wrote to
Otis Bridges, who is with the Ameri
can Army of Occupation. In the
course of his letter he used these
words:
“Dear Otis —The world loves the
German Rhine with its castles and
vineyards, its history and traditions,
with its chivalry and poetry, from
its cradle in the snowy Alps to its
grave in the sands of Holland. But
the world does not love the house of
Hohenzollem, where the haughty
Prussians sit to plan their raid of
shame, and will not endure it,” etc.
In reply to this letter, Otis writes
under date of May 13th from Tourin
tien, Germany, as follows:
Dear Bob —Received your letter of
April 4th a few days ago, and was
glad to hear from you and to bear
that you all are well. This leaves me
getting along as fine as I can. Went
to Andernach on pass yesterday,
and guess I will go on a three day
pass tomorrow to Neunhar, a German
town not far from here. Bob, I sure
wish that you could take a trip down
the Rhine on boat or on land. I have
taken three boat rides on the Rhine
and 1 have made several trips in
our commerce truck along the river.
One good thing they have over here
and that is good roads. They may
be crooked and steep, but they are
made out of stone and concrete.
It’s about 25 or 30 miles from
where we are to Coblenz, and I
have been there several times, and
most of the way the road runs right
along the water’s edge, and with a
row of green trees on both sides of
the road, and the river runs between
high hills and mountains, and with
the mountains in cultivation where
it is possible, it makes scenery that
surpasses in beauty any that
I have ever seen. As you say, they
have these hills all planted in grape
vines and fruit. Bob, I have been
riding along the Rhine and have
seen a string of boats half a mile
long, and at the same time I can see
a freight train over on the other side
running right alongside the river.
Andernach on the Rhine is an old
historical town now of 9,000 people.
1 notice just as we go into Andernach
an old crane that was in use several
hundred years ago. I have been told
that prisoners of war were kept in
there and run this thing; just how
they operated it I don’t know, but I
was given to understand that it was
a cruel way of doing. And on my
ride dow n the river I noticed a large
steel bridge across the Rhine that
that has been built by the Allied
prisoners of war and it wasn’t quite
done w’hen the armistice was signed.
Some one on the boat laughed and
said “Do you reckon they will finish
building it?” Good as to say no.
The farthest down the river I have
been was to Bonn, which, as you
know, is an old historical town of
80,000 people. Now, this trip was
the best of all. With a little raiding
party, we took in some of the places.
1 know you have read of Beethoven
(1 may not spell it right), but any
w r ay we went in the house where he
made his music and instruments.
There were the sheets of music and
his instruments just like he left
them. We also went into the room
where he was born.
Bob, 1 could tell you a lot more
than 1 can .write. But I can say this
much, that I have seen some of the
prettiest places over here I ever saw
or ever will see anywhere. Yes, 1
notice old castles all along the
Rhine, but I haven’t any dope on
these castles, as there are so many
that I can't recollect who built them
or anything about them. I recollect
one, l believe, that was built in 1100
and something. I wish that I could
recollect all such as this.
Will write you again soon.
I think we will be on our way home
by July.

240 Pound Hogs.
With corn above 50 cents, hogs
eat their heads off very quickly. The
hog that takes two or three months
to get on full feed never brings you
a profit.
When you are ready to put your
shoats on feed, begin with the B. A.
Thomas’ Hog Medicine. Use regu
larly and watch your shoats round
out into fat hogs in nine months —
hogs going well over 2.00 pounds and
as high as 240 pounds. Figure the
average feeding and you will see
why the B. A. Thomas medicine is a
good investment. Try feeding out
your liogs on this plan and if you
are not more than pleased, we will
refund the cost of the medicine.
