| BASEBALL NEWS ALBANY WINS FIRST HALF. | The first half of the pennant race in the South Georgia Circuit came to a close Saturday, Albany winning by a narrow margin over Dawson. Ar lington stood third, Amerlcus fourth, Blakely fifth and Bainbridge sixth. SECOND HALF OPENS. Nearly every team in the circuit has strengthened for the second half. Blakely has several new players, among them being Jenkins and Pounds, outfielders; Thrasher and Wilkes, inflelders; McClelland, catch er; Williamson, Kemp and Turk, pitchers. The club looks like a real winner now, and expect to make a hot fight for the second half of the season, thereby winning a fight with Albany for the real winner of the season. —o— BLAKELY AND ARLINGTON SPLIT EVEN. Arlington drew first blood in the opening series Monday afternoon, in a six-inning affair following a downpour of rain by the score of 5 to 3. Cochran on the mound for Blakely, was touched for four hits, which coupled with several bases on balls, gave the visitors four tallies in the first two innings. After this lie held the visiting swatters hitless. Luther Blood worth was touched for nine safeties by the local swatsmlths, but managed to get by with a vic tory, although things were looking bad for him when his limps called the game on account of darkness at the end of the sixtli inning. George Clark, Blakely center fielder, and one of the most popular players who ever donned a Blakely uniform, con tributed a circus catch which drew much applause from the stands. A running, leaping one-handed stall of a line drive that was easily labeled three bases. Blakely evened the score up on Tuesday, in Arlington, however, win ning by the score of 3 to 1 in one of the prettiest and hardest fought games of the season. It was a pret ty pitcher’s battle between Turk for Blakely and Wilder for Arlington, the former allowing 7 hits and the latter 8. Both hurlers were accorded errorless support. The feature catch of the afternoon was made by Jen kins, Blakely left fielder, who made a shoe string catch of Stone’s liner in the last inning. It was one of the prettiest catches ever made on any ground. Wilkes also contributed a nice catch in the opening inning. George Clark was the timely hitter, getting the hit that drove in the two Blakely runs in the ninth in ning. Wednesday’s game was broken up by a down pour of rain during the fourth inning, Arlington leading at There u . dts,,- ence in .tires. This game will be played oft in Blakely next Thursday afternoon. when a double-header will be played. t TACKLE DAWSON TODAY. 1 The Blakely Club went up to Daw -1 son today for games today and to - morrow, returning Saturday for a game here Saturday with Dawson. 1 Dawson made a hard fight for the i first, half and has one of the best f clubs in the circuit, and our gang t will have to work hard to defeat f Eddie Rawson’s charges. Quite a large delegation of fans will go up to see the game today, no doubt. THE SCHEDULE. The following is the schedule of the entire circuit for the next six days: Today (Thursday) Americus at Arlington. Blakely at Dawson. Bainbridge at Albany. Friday, July 27. Americus at Arlington. Blakely at Dawson. Albany at Bainbridge. Saturday, July 28. Arlington at Albany. Dawson at Blakely. Americus at Bainbridge. Monday, July 30. Bainbridge at Arlington. Dawson at Americus. Thursday, August 2. Albany at Americus. Dawson at Bainbridge. Arlington at Blakely (2 games). o 1 DUST FROM THE DIAMOND, 1 “Goat” Cochran has been made ■ manager of the Blakely club, suc ceeding Coach Walter Wade, who gave up his post following Saturday’s game. The new manager imme diately got busy securing new play ers, determined to give Blakely a winning club. —o— Pete Austin, popular outfielder on the Blakely club, who was released, has signed up with Albany, we hear. Pete was a good ball player and will make Albany a valuable man. There were too many outfielders on the club and some one had to go. —o — Pounds in right field and Jenkins in left look mighty good. With the old reliable Clark in center. Blakely can boast of as good outfield as any of ’em—it just can’t be beat. o The pitching staff, with Cochran, Turk. Williamson, Morris and Kemp, looks good. Dick Lowrey, well known in South Georgia, is expected to join the club this week. —o — The count now stands 3 and 1 in Blakely’s favor in the games played with our old rival, Arlington. The boys from the little Calhoun county city are working hard to even the count, and the games next week, especially the double-headev Thurs day afternoon, should draw a record breaking crowd. Blakely doesn t in tend to be licked by Arlington this year. —o — Many of the sport writers and the public, too, as for that matter, are panning the directors of the South Georgia Circuit for allowing Joe Jackson, blacklisted leaguer, to play with Americus in this circuit. It will be remembered that Shoeless Joe was one of the six White Sox (Chicago) players who were fired by President Comiskey for throwing the 1919 world’s series. Blakely plays only one home game with Americus during the second half, hence the heavy hitter will be seen in action in Blakely only once.
