SEEK SUBSCRIPTIONS
TO NEW CORPORATION
Albany, Ga. —Arrangements are be
ing made by Paul J. Brown, Albany
Banker, who heads the new Georgia
Agricultural Credit Corporation, to
secure as many subscriptions to the
capital stock as possible, even up to
the full maximum of $250,000.00
which the charter authorizes. The
corporation, which was launched by
the Georgia Peanut Growers Co-op
erative Association, of which Mr. j
Brown is a director, will make loans I
to farmers who can give good securi- !
ty on short term paper, which are
expected to be a great help in 1924
crop operations, particularly in sec
tions of agricultural distress.
Loans will be through the banks
which subscribe to the capital stock,
and for that reason Mr. Brown and
the Peanut Association are making
every effort to have the stock sub
scriptions as widely distributed as
possible. Loans will be made at
the rate of 7 percent, per annum,
and will be for not less than six,
nor more than nine months, thus af
fording the first government money
available to farmers on short term
notes. The Federal Intermediate
Credit Bank will make loans up to
the amount of ten times the capital
stock, which will give $2,500,000.00in
additional credits if the full amount
of the capital stock is taken.
Peanut Association officials are in
terested in the Corporation, and took
the lead in its organization, they say,
because it will enable the members of
that Association to borrow money at
a low rate of interest and operate
on a cash basis, thus avoiding high
prices that usually go with time pur
chases. Loans will be limited to
members of standard co-operative
marketing associations, and Peanut
Association officials believe, they say,
that their members will be among
the chief beneficiaries of the new
credit plan. It will also enable Pea
nut Association members, the officers
say, to purchase seed Peanuts from
the Association, which has large
quantities of choice ones at cash
prices. The Association is not al
lowed under its charter to sell pea
nuts on time. The seed offered by
the Association are said to be the
best ever assembled in any consider
able quantity in Georgia, and are a
part of the Association’s seed calcu
lation and -crop investment plan.
The Peanut Association, which is
one of the newest co-ops in Georgia,
is in the midst of a new membership
campaign that is rapidly expanding
the scope and the strength of the
organization. Campaigns already un
der way are bringing into the Asso
ciation the counties where peanuts
will be grown as a commercial crop
for the first time this year. These
will be followed by campaigns in
the old territory that will make the
co-op stronger where it already op
erates. The campaign has resulted
*n a 15 per cent increase in member
ship, and a 20 per cent increase in
acreage under contract.
