MISSIONARY TO CHINA
SCORESMAH JONGG
Mah jongg was vigorously denounc
ed by Miss Catharine Bryan, mis
sionary to China, at the closing
session yesterday afternoon at the
institute of the West Central divis
ion of the Baptist Woman’s Mission
ary Union at the Rose Hill Baptist
church.
The speaker stated that the game
is rated low in China and that she
felt sure that if American women
were more familiar with it as it is
played in China, they would not
dare to engage in it.
Mali jongg. Miss Bryan said, is a
gambling game, pure and simple, and
a pastime of moral degenerates in
China, being played extensively in
The red light districts of that coun
try. The game is now and has, al
ways been associated with immoral
and illegal practices, she asserted.
Miss Bryan declared that a recep
tion of the game in America will
have the effect of neutralizing the
good work that American missionar
ies are doing in China. She stated
that the ratio of Christian mission
aries to heathen China is one to 1250.
She said that conditions now in
China are due to the need of the
Christian religion.
Miss Bryan said that her father and
mother were missionaries to China
at the time she was born. She said
that she was born in China, but she
was a Georgian by adoption. Her
parents were originally frojn Virgin
ia, she said, and her education was
received in Virginia.
After giving her hearers some in
teresting facts regarding the history'
of China, the speaker sought to cor
rect a number of impressions of that
country which she emphatically de
clared were false. —Columbus Enquir
er-Sun.
