Blakely, Ga., October 2, 1924.
It’s tax paying time in Georgia
again.
A careful buying public are read
ers of advertisements. The shrewd
business man is the consistent
and persistent advertiser.
o
The first of October came in with
a nip of winter in the air. The U.
S. Weather Bureau here recorded a
minimum of 42 degrees, just 10 above
freezing.
o
The first day of October brought j
something else besides a drop in i
temperature. The price of gasoline !
dropped cents per gallon. This
will be welcome news to the motor
ing public.
u
The season for shooting squirrels
and opossums opened in Georgia
yesterday. October Kith opens the
dove season, while November 20 will
usher in the open season for quail.
The state game department is call
ing on the Nimrod sportsmen of
Georgia to abide by the hunting
laws so that the proper preservation!
of game may he maintained.
o
The State Democratic Convention
will be held in Macon next Wednes
day. Ratification of the nominees
in the recent State primary and
the naming of a new State Executive
Committee are the chief items of
interest to come before the session.
The delegates forming the Conven
tion were named from among the
supporters of Governor Walker, who
had no opposition in the late pri
mary.
If the American people have no
more conscience than to return the
present Republican administration for
another four years after such a re
cord of corruption as has existed
during the Harding-Coolidge admin
istration. the first official act of Mr.
Coolidge, upon his return to power,
should be the appointment of former
Attorney General Daugherty as Sec
retary of the Treasury. Place these
grafters where they can have easy
access to the whole works!
John W. Davis, Democratic nom
inee for president “sells” himself
readily to bis audiences wherever he
appears in his speech-making cam
prlm, according to press reports, and
o’’ all his public appearances he has
been greeted by vast throngs. The
Democratic tide, at a low ebb fol
lowing the New York Convention, is
said to be slowly rising, ami hopes
of success in the November election
are increasing with each public ap
pearance of the party nominee.
The Washington baseball team hav
ing won the American League pen
nant, the baseball fans all over the
country are anxiously waiting for the
opening of the series with the New
York national league team on Satur
day to determine who shall be called
the world’s champions. The major-1
ity of fandom seems to be “pulling" i
for the Washington clua, the chier j
reason for which is the unprecedent-j
ed popularity of its premier twirler, I
Walter Johnson, a veteran of 18 j
seasons.
o
There will be many araens to the j
following editorial comment from the;
Tifton Gazette: “Now that we have
settled the contests for state house,
offices for another two years maybe
we can settle down to business and,
get this good old state in good busi-i
ness shape before another state elec
tion rolls around, by which time we,
hope provision will be made for j
holding state elections once in four
years instead of every two, as at j
present.” 1
GEORGIA BABY BOOK.
The News is indebted to the State
Board of Health, through Dr. Joe P.
Bowdoin, director of the division of
child hygiene and special agent of
the children’s bureau, for a copy of
our Georgia Baby Book. It contains
information that will do much good,
provided, of course, it is intelligently
followed. It is free to expectant
mothers and mothers with young
babies.
The edition is limited, owing to the
printing fund of the State being in
adequate. This fund is now com
pletely used tip for 1924, so another
edition can not be printed soon,
hut so long as they last the Board
wants our county to have its share.
The State Board of Health is ever
anxious to serve our people, and be
sides this Baby Book they have
other publications they will be glad
to send out.
