ANSWERS TO THE LAST GREAT
BUGLE CALL.
T. E. HIGHTOWER.
Capt. Thomas E. Hightower of
Damascus, better known as “Nick”
Hightower to our people, died in
Atlanta last Saturday and was bur
ied with Masonic ceremonies at Da
mascus Tuesday morning.
The deceased was in his eighty
first year and was a member of the
Early Guards which fought through
the civil w r ar, his record showing his
enlistment as a private, his being
wounded at Sharpsburg in 1863 and
at Spottsylvania in 1864, promoted
to 2nd Sergeant in August 1863,
first lieutenant in 1864, and com
manded the company as Captain at
the time of surrender. His death
leaves only two members of his
company surviving—Mr. D. S. Jerni
gan of Blakely and Mr. Jim Fuller
Bush of Miller county.
As a child this writer remembers
“Nick” Hightower as a salesman in
the store of Buchannon and Fleming
and a boarder at the home of Judge
Fleming in 1871. Shortly afterward
he entered business in Damascus
with Mr. Giles Webb and for more
than a half century the business has
continued with success, though Mr.
John A. Hightower succeeded Mr.
Webb as a member of the firm and
the name was changed from Webb &
Hightower to Hightower & Co.
Mr. Hightower is survived by one
son, Mr. H. E. Hightower, and by
three daughters, Mrs. Mary Speight,
Mrs. Fraseur, and Mrs. J. S. Pratt.
He was also step father to Mrs.
John A. Hightower, Mr. W. W. Kea
ton and Dr. P. H. Keaton. A brother
Mr. P. S. Hightower; a half brother,
Mr. Joel W. Hightower of Americus;
and a half sister, Mrs. Clifford Bru
ton, also survives him.
Mr. Hightower represented Early
county several terms in the House
of Representatives and one term in
the State Senate.
The community in which he so
long resided and whose lives he touch
ed in so many ways will greatly
miss him.
MR. JIM NEVES
PASSES AWAY
Mr. James C. Neves an aged and
well known citizen of Clay county,
died at his home on the Colomokee
creek about 9:30 o’clock Sunday
morning.
Mr. Neves was in his 74th year
and had long been identified with
the business interests of this section,
owning considerable property in
Early County.
Mr. Neves’ remains were interred
at Bethel church in Clay County
Monday afternoon beside his wife
who proceded him some months ago.
He is survived by three sons,
Messrs. Richard, Ernest and Grover
Neves of Clay County and a daugh
ter, Mrs. A. J. Hammock of Blake
ly, who have the sympathy of our
people in their sorrow at the going
away of their beloved father.

BLAKELY HI STILL
ACCREDITED SCHOOL
COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS
NOT REQUIRED.
Due to the fact that the City
Board of Education has reduced the
number of high shool teachers from
five to four, it has been rumored
that Blakely Hi will not be accredit
ed school. This is a mistake as
Blakely Hi still continures in the
same status as an accredited school
and graduates of 1926 will not have
to stand entrance examinations at
college. This simply means that a
little more work will fall on the
high school teachers but the same
high standard will be maintained.
