Foreign Advert vuni: Representative
Till AMF.RK AN PRESS ASSOCIATION
Blakely, Ga., December 24, 1925.
We are just wishing for all our
readers a full measure of the joys
that usually come with the Yuletide
season.
o
The rains of the past week have
added further proof that the only
good roads are paved roads —-and the
sooner we get them the better.
Q
“Considerable rain has fallen in
this section during the past week,
and there is now more water on
the ground than at any time since
the early spring flood.
*■ ■ O ———■"
And now President Coolidge takes
Colonel House into confidence and
« • solicits his advice on the World
Court and perhaps other foreign
matters of prime importance. There
must be something behind the mask
of the little silent man who was
such an important figure during the
administration of the late President
Wilson, who made of the a Colonel
his most important confidante.
4 O
As was to be expected, the court
martial found Colonel Mitchell guilty
and gave him a sentence of five
years’ suspension from the service
without pay. The case now goes to
the President, who is expected to
confirm the findings of the court
martial. If press dispatches are to
be relied on, we may expect to hear
further from the ousted Colonel,
for it is said that the people of
his home state, Wisconsin, expect to
run him for U. S. Senator against
Lenroot, the present Republican ad
ministration candidate from that
State. None other than David Law
rence, recognized political writer of
Washington, says that should the
election be held now, it is not doubt
ed that the Colonel would win in a
walk.
o
Now that Governor Walker has
vailed the Legislature into extra
session for February 24th, discus
sion as to the wisdom of such a
step will do no good. It is to be
hoped that the members of the as
sembly will make a serious effort to
do something for the old soldiers,
the schools and the public highways
of the state. Partisan poltics should
be left out of the matter entirely.
Inasmuch as the Governor has dis
claimed openly any intention of fur
ther political preferment on his part,
it is not doubted that his motives
are for the betterment of the
state while those states around us
are awakening to the opportunities
of the present hour. Let’s have a
little constructive legislation and an
early adjournment.
A HALF CENTURY
AGO TODAY
SOME THINGS THAT HAPPENED
FIFTY YEARS AGO.
The Early County News of Decern-'
ber 24th, 1875, expressed the opin-i
ion that “Walking whisky jugs have i
no business at social parties where .
decent people arc- assembled for j
pleasure.”
Rev. P. S. Tw-itty was sent back j
ito the Blakely circuit by the Metho- I
' dist conference, with Rev. S. R. j
i Weaver as supernumerary.
An adjourned session of Early ,
superior court lasting two days was.
held by Judge W. D. Kiddoo from ■
which the chain gang received sev
eral new recruits. Among the visit
ing lawyers present were Messrs. '
Clarke, Felder, Flewellen, Hood and
Worrill, of Cuthbert; Bush and
Sheffield, of Colquitt; Kennon and
McLendon, of Fort Gaines; Ruther
ford. of Macon; and Blocker, of
Bluffton. (It is interesting to recall
that four of these attorneys after
wards served as judge of the Pa
taula circuit, viz: John T. Clarke,
A. Hood and W. C. Worrill, of Cuth
bert, and Henry C. Sheffield, then
of but later of Early coun
ty. None of them are alive now.) •
The grand jury recommended
that Senator and Representative in
the legislature have the offices of
tax assessor and collector consoli
dated ; also that the office of clerk i
of superior court and county treas- ;
urer be consolidated.
The paper contained a column !
article from Senator T. J. Perry, i
making suggestions of office consol-!
idation and reducing grand jurors
and petit jurors by half.
The editor complains that “An- ;
thony Hutchins has undertaken to .
founder us on oysters by sending:
us a whole barrel, right fresh from ;
Apalachicola, but he can’t come it. i
We take them down in any shape •
they may be put before us, so the ; j
shell is off—raw, roasted, stewed, I.
souped, fried or pied.”
NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS.
i.
There are quite a number of sub-!
scribers to the Early County News. 1
who did not renew during the re-!
cent campaign. Some of these have ‘
already expired and some will i
expire shortly. We desire to call I
attention of - all these to the fact'
that we will revise our list again |
January Ist and will cut off all who ■
have not paid for some period in;
advance.
Remember, if you renew now you
can still get the $1.50 a year rate.
However, if you should wait until
January Ist to renew- it will cost
you $2.00. Why not save that 50c
by attending to the matter now?
Solid car load of those pretty Iron
Beds just received.

THE HOME PORT
As the Yuletide Slips into the Harbor of World Hap
piness and a New Year Stands in the Offing, We
Behold the Spectacle of America Making
Its Most Hallowed Port—Home.
A great Amercan trait is that we are a home loving race. It
matters not where the exigencies of business may take us or how
great the distance from friends, loved ones and old associations,
the Yuletide spirit turns our thoughts and hearts and faces to
ward that place, be it cottage or mansion, that means to us all
that is true and beautiful in our lives.
And so, at this season many thousands of people are planning
the trip—-back to the haunts of their childhood; and back there
eager smiles await the home-coming.
Christmas presents a problem to a great railroad, because it
is the railroad’s duty to sleeplessly and vigilantly contribute its
service to those who are “homeward bound.”
The Central of Georgia Railway feels that it may best express
its greetings to that great army of friends and patrons—the
public, by doing everything in its power to safely speed them
back to the family circles which wait.
If then we are privileged to serve you and contribute in
any way to the comfort of your Christmas journey, we shall
feel that we have substantially expressed what we would like to
say in person—a Merry Christmas to you ' and all that are
within your house.
