to the list of Christmas tragedies in
the country.
The victim was Henry Cawthon,
an 18 year old negro boy, a son of
Virdell Cawthon, who was killed by
his own father.
The killing is reported as accident
al, it being claimed that Virdell was
shooting at a target when his son
stepped in front of the glm just as
it was fired. The body was interred
at New Prospect church Saturday.

HAMILTON HARDWARE CO.
Blakely, Georgia.
A Letter from
Mr. J. D. Haddock
Editor Early County News:
A short time ago a Chamber of
' Commerce was organized at Blakely.
Its avowed purpose was to promote
the interests of the whole county,
; and it was to be called “The Early
I County Chamber of Commerce.” Cu
' riously enough, nearly every di
' i rector of this enterprise lived in
' Blakely, although it was supposed to
Ibe a county-wide affair. Very soon
J after its organization, a banquet was
! given in the court house, and at this
' banquet a subscription was raised to
i hire a Secretary. No secretary has
yet been hired, BUT certain Blake
ly gentlemen, purporting to repre
sent the Chamber of Commerce,
have hit upon a plan whereby they
I i can get a Secretary for a very cheap
I price. THEY HAVE PROPOSED
Ito your county board of
i ROADS AND'REVENUES that the
I new Secretary of the Chamber of
I Commerce be YOUR COUNTY
I AGENT! They have told your
I County Board of Commissioners that
! they can get a man up in Maryland
or somewhere else up North that
can hold down both jobs. Under
the plan that they propose, the Coun
ty will pay the new man SI2OO, the
Chamber of Commerce will contrib
ute SBO0 —thus making a total of
$2,000 —and that then the Agricul
tural Department of the Government
will match this with an additional
$2,000, thus giving this new man a
$4,000 a year salary, of which the
Chamber of Commerce will only
pay $800!
These gentlemen claim that this
new man can easily hold both jobs.
“No man can serve two masters.”
If this plan goes through, I leave it
to the farmers of Early county to
say which master the new man will
neglect, the Chamber of Commerce
at Blakely, or the farmer in the I
[country. You know the answer.
I like Blakely and I like the people [
in Blakely. 1 do not want to take j
the position of putting the country |
[ against the town. They should i
[ work together and not against each
• other. BUT, when an attempt is
! made to take away from the farm
! ers of the country a man whose only
business is to help them, and to use
the money appropriated by the De
partment of AGRICULTURE to pay
i the salary of a Secretary for a
[ Chamber of Commerce at Blakely,
i it seems to me that it is high time
! the farmers were being heard from.
It takes a man’s whole time to I
'! be a county agent. During the past
’ i year the County Agent of this
1 j county has innoculated over 5,000 [
’ head of hogs, has sold over $44,000
' I worth of hogs at co-operative sales I
[(besides the chicken, potato and
! cattle sales), has sowed pastures,
[ helped the farmers buy seed, calcium I
' ! arsenate, live stock and trees cheap, [
' and has conducted calcium arsenate,
I boll weevil and corn weevil demon
j ! strations. He has never refused to
I respond to a single call made on .
. [ him. A man simply can not do the |
I
I work of a county agent and at the i
same time hold down the job as a I
Secretary for the Chamber of Com
merce at Blakely.
Under the plan proposed, Early,
county will pay SI2OO to the new
combination man that has been go-
EARLY COUNTY NEWS
ing solely to the salary of the Farm
ers’ Agent. Under the plan pro
posed, the United States Department
of AGRCULTURE (the farmer’s
department) will pay $2,000 to this
new man; this being paid from a
fund raised and appropriated SOLE- :
LY FOR THE HELP OF THE i
FARMER! The Chamber of Com- I
merce will get the services of a $4,- j
000.00 a year man at the grand and I
lavish outlay of $800! The County!
and the Department of Agriculture ■
will pay the rest!
This plan has not been mentioned
to the farmers. All the discussions
have taken place at Blakley; all the
meetings have been held at Blakely.
The country people have not been ;
consulted in any way whatever.
I am writirig this to put the farm-!
ers of the county on notice of this j
scheme, and to ask them to meet i
before the Board of County Com-!
missioners on the first Tuesday in !
January, that we may make OUR
showing to the Board and prevent
OUR MONEY from being diverted
from the farmers’ use to that of a
Chamber of Commerce.
Respectfully,
JOHN D. HADDOCK.
