U. S. FLAG ASSURES
JOB FOR SUBJECTS
President Coolidge Tells
South Dakota Legislature.
Rapid City, S. D.—The American
flag assures every one under its
protection an occupation, the best in
the world, President Coolidge de
clared Saturday in an informal ad
dress to the legislature of South
Dakota.
Speaking on the law-n of the
summer White House, where the
legislators called upon him, Mr. Cool
idge asked them to bear in mind that
the American flag flies over all
parts of the county and “whatever
position we are in, we are in a better
condition than any one else on
earth.”
He reiterated his pleasure in liv
ing in this location and said it re
minded him of his native hills in
Vermont.
Mr. Coolidge had not intended to
speak, but he made his few remarks
in response to a request from the
legislators after they had been re
ceived by him and Mrs. Coolidge. As
Mr. and Mrs. Coolidge turned to
leave the group gave him a rousing
“hip, hip, hooray.”
Comparing Vermont with South
Dakota,, the president declared that
“here as there they are under the
same flag and same variety of peo
ple.”
“Any one who has an occupation
under the American flag, no matter
what it is, that person can be as
sured of the best occupation and
best job of any on earth. That’s
what the American flag means.
While it is natural that we all want
to better our positions, that, too, is
an American ideal.”
Upon leaving the Lodge the legis
lators motored to Lookout Mountain
which they decided Friday to call
Mount Coolidge hereafter.
Asa W. Candler, of Atlanta, was
elected head of the Georgia Division
American Legion at their Convention
in Savannah last week.

We Have Funds.
“Take my check for that account
of mine?” the Louisiana patient
queried.
“On what bank?” the Louisiana
doctor queried.
“It’s on the Starlight Bank, and
I’ve got funds to cover it.”
“Any objection to me wiring the
bank to see if it is good?”
“Not the slightest,” the patient
agreed, and the doctor sent a tele
gram describing the check.
“Is the check good?” the telegram
asked.
“We have funds to pay the check
: mentioned,” the bank wired back.
“Not definite enough to suit me,”
the doctor demurred.
“Ask them to confirm it,” the pa
tient suggested, and the doctor
wired again.
“Confirm your telegram that you
will pay check,” the second wire
stated.
“This confirms our telegram that
we have funds to pay check,” the
bank replied, the check went forward,
was dishonored, and the doctor sued
the bank in the Louisiana courts.
“Your telegrams constituted a cer
tification of the check,” the doctor
contended.
“All we said was that we had
funds, but there was no promise to
| pay,” the bank retorted, and the
■ Court ruled in the bank’s favor.
“These telegrams of the bank
I simply imparted the information
that the balance of the drawer was
sufficient to meet the check, and did
not import an acceptance of the
check or promise to pay it. They
seem to have -been carefully worded
for guarding against acceptance or
promise to pay. In fact, the person
who sent them testified that he took
the w-ording from the code of the
African Bankers’ Association,
where for saying eactly what was
said in these telegrams the word
‘lounging’ is to be used, and for ac
cepting or promising to pay a check
the word ‘lovebird’ is to be used,”
said the Court in 91 Southern, 405.

Our experience in the Peanut Shelling business has
taught us the advantage to the farmer of properly pick- g

for this reason we have taken the sales agency for the

We have personally inspected the new Model Lillis- g

we find this to be superior to anything else on the mar-
