I THE AMERICAN PRESS ASSOCIATION
Blakely, Ga., March 22, 1928.
Cotton planting started the past
week, although slowed up by the
rains.
o
Flying ants have been boiling out
of their holes the past week, a sure
sign of Spring.
o
Porto Rico wants complete inde
pendence. Like the little dog racing
down the track after the big through
train, we wonder what they would
do with it if they got it.
o
We have come to the conclusion
that Senator George is really presi
dential timber. The way he got
by with that naming of delegates,
with everybody reasonably satisfied,
including ourselves, convinces us
that he could handle the wheel of
the ship of State.
o
A trip to the woods will disclose
all nature awakening. The trees
are budding rapidly, many well ad
vanced. Wild plum, yellow jessa
mine, mayhaw and red-bud are al
ready displaying their colors and
the birds are carrying twigs to
build their nests.
o •
The State Democratic Executive I
Committee having set September 12 |
as the date for the State primary and
June 23rd as the last date of entry, I
State politics will begin taking on j
new life. Candidates will be coming I
out within a very short time.
o
The Democrats have some mighty [
good campaign thunder for the com-1
ing campaign in the .Teapot Dome i
scandal, provided they nominate a
candidate at the Houston convention
who is not a product of an organiza-1
tion whose reputation is scarcely |
less odorous than that which put I
the present administration in power.
o
There’s no question but that the
oil quiz is getting worse as it the j
committee digs deeper. The Repub-[
lican party is a part and parcel of it |
and they can’t lay it all on that I
earnest, but misguided man, the late [
President Harding. Certainly the
1924 funds were used to elect
Coolidge. Evidently the president '
used rare judgment in not choosing
to run.
o
The so-called equalization fund for j
needy public schools in backwood I
counties as handled by the State :
School Board has resulted in any
thing else but equalization. For in
stance Terrell and Colquitt counties
with ample school funds, each re-'
ceives $20,000 of the hand out, while
Clay, Calhoun and Miller, all of
them small and needy in the matter ■
of school funds, receive practically
nothing. If that is the Board’s
idea of equalization, our guess is j
that the next legislature will repeal ■
the so-called equalization law.
o
The following taken from the
Arlington Courier is of considerable
interest to Blakely and Early county; \
“Hon. John D. Haddock of Damascus,
was a visitor in Arlington Wednesday. I
He is gradually recovering from an
operation he underwent recently at
an Atlanta hospital to correct a
stomach trouble. Mr. Haddock gave
a representative of The Courier a
telegram he had received from the
State Highway Department advising
that the Department’s chief civil en
gineer would be down here yesterday
to go over the matter of surveying
the Cuthbert-Edison-Arlington-Dam
ascus-Colquitt road preparatory to
getting it in shape to be made a
State Highway.”
