SUNDAY SCHOOL
... LESSON...
CHRISTIAN SONSHIP
Lesson for Oct. 3. John 3.
Golden Text: John 1:12
By REV. CHAS. E. DUNN
The first Epistle of John was writ
ten early in the second century at
about the same time as the Fourth
Gospel. It cannot reasonably be
doubted that both books are by the
same author, for they have the same
style, vocabulary, and pattern of
thought. Scholars debate whether
the Epistle was written before or
after the Gospel. If the Epistle,
which is much simpler, came first,
we may look upon it as a prepara
tion for the longer, more elaborate
Gospel. If the Epistle came later we
may think of it as an attempt to
remove certain difficulties created
by the Gospel. There is reason to
believe, however, that the Epistle,
despite its similarity to John’s Gos
pel, is quite independent. From this
point of view we can say, with Prof.
Scott, that it reveals John as “apply
ing his conceptions to matters of
common life and to the practical
issues of his own day.”
Note how John stresses the cen
tral significance of the soul’s health.
His emphasis is primarily on the
inner life. “Love not the world,” he
says, “neither the things that are in
the world.” One’s heart must be
weaned away from the passions of
earth and centered upon God and
His love. “If our hearts do not con
demn us,” John assures us in our
lesson text, “we have perfect con
fidence toward God.”
But how are we to prove the real
ity of this inward experience? By
three tests, John insists. First, there
is the test of ethical behavior. “We
do know that we know Him, if we
keep His commandments.” Second
ly, there is the test of belief. “Every
spirit which acknowledges that Jesus
Christ has come as man is from
God.” Finally, there is the test of
brotherly love. Again and again
does John return to the theme of
love. Consider that characteristic
phrase, “Beloved, let us love one
another: for love is of God.” In a
world of hate how much we need
this counsel!
A CARD OF THANKS
Let me take this method of thank
ing my friends for their wonderful
kindness during my recent stay in
the hospital. So many things were
done by so many of my friends that
I can’t remember them all. I want
you to know that I deeply appre
ciate your thoughtfulness.
Sincerely,
(MISS) RUTH SMITH.
