Secretary of the Navy Knox
said last week that American
warships are convoying merch
ant ships as far as Iceland.
The inference is that British
warships there assume protec
tion for the remainder of the
trip to the British Isles. The
President has declared the
waters of the Atlantic to Ice
land to be in the zone neces
sary to the defense of the
western hemisphere and that
the U. S. Navy has been given
orders to “shoot on sight” Axis
submarines or surface raiders
sighted in the America-to-Ice
land sea lane.
o
The city authorities have
taken steps to protect the
school children from traffic ac
cidents in marking off walk
ways on the public square and
other zones where the children
are attending classes, and po
lice officers have been instruct
ed to rigidly enforce the city
ordinance against speeding and
reckless driving. The Mayor
and Council are to be com
mended for their action and it
is hoped the traffic laws will
be strictly enforced. The lives
of these Early county youths
must be protected. Mr. Motor
ist, drive slowly and carefully
in the school zones.

The biggest tax bill in the
nation’s history has been pass
ed by Congress and signed by
the President. The new meas
ure, expected to raise three and
one-half billion dollars, will
touch, either directly or indi
rectly the pocketbook of every
American citizen. Income tax
exemptions have been low
ered to SISOO for married per
sons and $750 for single per
sons, which will add several
million new names to Uncle
Sam’s list of tax payers. Yes,
this all-out program of nation
al defense is going to cost, and
this cost is going to be felt, mis
take not. Prepare to meet
your share of the burden with
a smile and be thankful that
it is a contribution toward the
preservation of the American
way of life and not a tribute
to a conquering dictator. The
cost in the latter instance
would be infinitely more.

With hogs bringing a profitable
price again dishonest persons are
finding away to get in on the
harvest. Farmers in the Little River
section of Colquitt county began
missing hogs too frequently and
made an investigation. They found
that unidentified persons have built
hog traps, looking something like
the farm tobacco sleds, with trap
doors and triggers. Corn has been
used as bait. When the trap caught
a hog, it was fairly simple matter
to transfer the porker to a truck
and haul him to market for sale.
Most of the trapping has been done
at night, making it more difficult
to catch up with the thieves. Looks
like another chance for the state
patrol cattle theft squad to get in
some good work. The squad has
been mighty successful in dealing
with the cattle thief problem. If
each farmer marks his hogs, it ought
not to be very difficult to trace them
at the markets. —Tifton Gazete.
The announced shortage in teach
ers for Georgia schools caime as no
surprise to those who have kept track
of the trend of events. There are
various reasons for the shortage.
Many of the teachers became disgust
ed over the unseemly row among the
Board of Regents and sought posi
tions outside the state, while many
others went into government emplo
ment, where they have shorter hours,
more congenial employment and bet
ter pay. At least, you can’t blame
the teachers. —Walton Tribune.

Farm prices are quite encouraging
to the growers this year - and many
of them will make a substantial
profit on their farm operations this
year for the first time in many years.
Many will be able to retire debts
of long standing, others will be able
to pay off mortgages on their farms
and homes which will mean much to
their future. All in all, a good
year will be had by the farmers.—

The squirrels, and those of us who
love our goobers, hot from the shell,
can rejoice that a nickel is still *
nickel when it comes to our Arachis
hypogeea—peanut to you. Inflation
may be upon us, our favorite ham
burger shop may not look at us for
less than a dime, the 5-cent “hot
dog” has shrunk to just/a puppy, but
Mr. Peanut is still under control in
today’s price spiral. What would a
Saturday serial or a baseball game
be without a peanut to crack at the
crucial moment? What would pigeons
do? At any fair or circus that
boasts an elephant, watch the gleam
in that keen little eye as, skillfully,
your gargantuan playmate snares a
peanut you have tossed from out
your green-striped bag. “On’y Xi’
censabag. (Get ’em while they’re
hot.)” Wonderful what a nickel still
wil do! Will ice cream cone convey
ors please take the hint? —Christian
