Saturday, March 7,
To Be Observed As
“MacArthur Day”
We, H. C. Fort, Chairman of the
County Commissioners of Early
County, and R. C. Singletary, Sr.,
Mayor of Blakely, in cooperation
•with the National Government and
Honorable Claude R. Wickard, Sec
retary of Agriculture, do for and
on behalf of the above mentioned
Commissioners and City Council
declare March 7 as “MacArthur
Day” for Early County and Blakely.
“MacArthur Day” is being proclaim
ed for the purpose of collecting
scrap metal from the farms and
other sources available, aw esti
mated 2,500,000,000 pounds. This
scrap metal is to be sold to dealers
to go to our smelters for the produc
tion of much-needed war material
and equipment.
H. C. FORT,
-- " Chm. County Commissioners.
R. C. SINGLETARY,
Mayor of Blakely.
We, the undersigned civic organ
izations, endorse and pledge our co
operation in carrying out the provis
sions as set forth making March 7,
1942, “MacArthur Day.” The pro
visions set forth proclaiming “Mac-
Arthur Day” are out of patriotism
and with the desire for material
service. “MacArthur Day” is in
honor of General Douglas MacArthur
and for the purpose of collecting all
available scrap metal to be used in
the existing National emergency.
Therefore, we, the undersigned, af
fix our signatures for each respective
organization.
O. R. BROOKS,
Captain Early Co. Unit State
Guard.
W. C. COOK,
Commander Local Post The
American Legion.
W. H. WALL,
President Rotary Club.
PHILIP SHEFFIELD,
President Lions Club.
Moving with a mighty determina
tion, Early countians will r’ar back
with all their united strength Satur
day and “Scrap to Slap the Jap Off
the Map.” Saturday, March 7, is
“MacArthur Day”—the day for a
whirlwind clean-up job of collecting,
selling and moving scrap iron and
steel off the farms and into Wartime
industrial channels.
Chairman Felix P. Davis of the
Early County USDA War Board, has
announced everything in readiness
for the one-day drive, with every
organized farm group cooperating.
Receiving stations have been desig
nated and arrangements made for
the payment of farmers and others
for the scrap metal they deliver on
the clean-up day.
Groups and organizations cooper
ating in the War-Board-sponsored
drive inciude the Agricultural Ad
justment Administration, Farm Se
curity Administration, Soil Conserva
tion Service, Georgia Farm Bureau
Federation, Agricultural Extension
Service, county school superintend
ents, vocational teachers and Future
Farmers of America clubs.
All groups which already had con
ducted campaigns of the kind have
united with the County USDA War
Board with “MacArthur Day” as
their goal-day.
Chairman Davis announced this
week that scrap metal receiving sta
tions will be set up Saturday at the
following places in the county:
Sims’ Store—Urquhart.
Farr’s Store—Flea Hop.
Hall’s Store—Colomokee.
Willoughby’s Store—Cedar Sp’gs.
Allen’s Market —Blakely.
Hall’s Store—Hilton.
Clark Mosely’s Store —Jakin.
Burkett’s Store —Killarney.
Evans’ Store—Springfield.
Hunt’s Store—Sugar Tit.
M. D. Sasser’s Store —Rowena.
Howard’s Store —Old Town (Da
mascus).
“Obviously,” Mr. Davis said, we
do not expect everyone to bring in
large quantities of scrap metal. We
want every man, woman or child in
Early county to bring some to one of
the receiving stations, however small
the quantity may be. A child with a
cigar-box of discarded hinges or
broken knives, or the farm wife with
a cracked iron pot, will be as wel
come as the man bringing a 500-
pound boiler or an abandoned culti
vator.
To those who bring in large lots
of scrap, he directed an appeal for
investment of the money received
in Defense Bonds and Stamps, so
that both scrap and money can be
Used to defeat America’s enemies.
“Most of our farmers,” he said,
“already are preparing to contribute
heavily in hard work towad meeting
food and feed production goals.
That’s a long, hard job. But this is
a job we can do in a single day—■
one that will help the country im
measurably in its job of licking the
Japs. It’s a duty and a responsibility
that not a single one of us should
shirk.
“Let’s see the scrap metal pour in
March 7—‘MacArthur Day’—and
give the Japs a ‘slap’ the??ll feel
half-way around the earth,”

“RIGHT THIS WAY,
IF YOU PLEASE, SIR!”
Unless you happen to be an invited guest of the British Royal
Family, the best way to “see” Windsor Castle is under con
voy of a uniformed guide. In a sing-song patter, he will tell
you its history . . . point out things of interest whose full
significance would escape the unattended tourist.
It also saves time and shoe-leather to use “guides” when you
do your daily marketing at home. These guides are the ad
vertisements in this paper. They tell you where, when, and
the equally important “how much.”
By consulting the advertisements, you know in advance what
the stores have to offer. If you are pressed for time, you can
do your shopping by telephone, with the newspaper before
you as a definite guide. Read the advertisements . . . the big
ones and the little ones.
“Step this way,” the advertisements say,
saving time and lost motion.
